PLATTE COUNTY, Mo. - The father of former baseball star Rick Sutcliffe has been charged with deviant sexual assault.

A family member says that over a period of eight years, 69-year-old Richard Sutcliffe molested her.

She's now 33 years old and says she finally went to police after the memories of what happened resurfaced and she began to fear for her own daughter's safety.

Police say after his step-daughter came forward with the allegations, several family members confronted Sutcliffe.

They say he apologized to each of them and told them it happened a long time ago. He blamed a drinking problem.

His son, Rick Sutcliffe, pitched for the Dodgers, the Indians, Cubs, Orioles, and ended his career as a Cardinal in St. Louis. Born in INdependence, he was a three-time all star, the rookie of the year, and the National League Cy Young award winner.

We have no comment except to ask that you have a little compassion for Dick's family who have always been "good people".

I am sure that this received the press attention because of Rick's prominence in the baseball world.

I don't see this as gossip. Hawker posted an article from a news source, detailing allegations made to a police department (not denied by driver, but blamed on a drinking problem) involving a former "name" sprint car driver from the 60's and 70's. He did it without commentary added. Unusual, but fair. E-Mods.

Sorry to hear about such things. Never knew or met Dick Sutcliffe.

I have had several occassions where I had to interview Rick Sutcliffe when he played for the Indians and let me tell you he was no joy to work with. Surly would be a decent adjective for him.

Hey Coach

You and I have different experiences with Rick Sutcliffe. I've never dealt with him on a professional level but the two times I've met him (once in Arizona and once at Knoxville) he was a really nice guy.He even bought a buddy and me a round of Budweisers at Harry Caray and Steve Stone's resturant in Mesa back in '86 during spring training. The conversation starter...I told him I used to watch his dad race and was wondering how Dick was doing. Ended up in a nice visit.

I watched Dick Sutcliffe race for many years. He was a hard-charger, tough on equipment and very intimidating (it seemed at the time) in person. Mr. Excitement on the track, that's for sure.

Rick was a tough competitor as a pitcher and was known to have a legendary temper, which was likely inherited from his dad, who was known to mix it up a bit on and off the track. Both father and son also seemed to enjoy their barley pops.
