Petaluma Speedway up next for Golden State Challenge 410 Sprint Car Series this Saturday April 18
By Gary Thomas
Petaluma, CA – April 14, 2009…The always exciting Petaluma Speedway is on tap for the Golden State Challenge Sprint Car Series this Saturday night, marking the fourth round of competition in the fight for the King of California season championship.
The tacky & hooked up track has been a welcome stop for the Golden State Challenge Series over the last few years with the racing being fantastic during the previous handful of visits. The series brought 410 winged sprint car racing back to the Petaluma Speedway 3/8 mile clay oval in 2005 and have run a total of seven night's since returning to the track.
Following his win last Saturday in Tulare San Jose's Tim Kaeding has taken over the point lead, but he isn't expected to be in competition this weekend due to the fact that he's scheduled to be running in the mid-west with the World of Outlaws over the next month. The Roth Motorsports No. 83jr however, will be on hand with another driver at the helm in Petaluma.
With T. Kaeding gone 13-time King of California Brent Kaeding will inherit the Golden State Challenge Series point lead heading into Petaluma. The Campbell driver has surprisingly not won at the Petaluma Speedway since the return in '05, but did finish in second during the June stop at the track last year. The wheel-man of the Al's Roofing Supply No. 69 won the GSC season opener at Placerville in late March and goes into this weekend holding a slim four point lead over a three way dog-fight behind him.
The fight for the runner-up spot in points behind "BK" going into Petaluma is a dead heat between Tyler Walker, Jonathan Allard and Jason Statler, who are all tied with 216 points.
Statler has been the most consistent of the three with a pair of runner-up finishes aboard his DF Rios Construction No. 00. The Grass Valley resident drove to victory last June in Petaluma, which marked his eighth career Golden State Challenge Series win, putting him in a tie with Sean Becker for eighth on the all-time list. "The Big Guy" also finished second during the April event at Petaluma and the track also happened to be the site of his very first Northern Auto Racing Club victory, which came during Speedweek 1996.
Walker is the only driver of the three to have won a main event so far this season and will look for redemption at the Petaluma Speedway this weekend following a pair of tough endings last year. During the April event Walker was part of a thrilling battle for the lead with Sean Becker over the first 18 laps, until contact with a lapped car took him out of contention. Déjà vu was seen in the June event when the Los Angeles racer was once again leading the feature until contact with a sideways lap car took away another possible win for the driver of the SC Motorsports No. 24. Walker will put that in the past this weekend as he looks for his second victory of the young season.
Allard, the two-time & defending King of California, has been the most dominant driver at the Petaluma Speedway since the return in '05. The driver of the Williams Motorsports No. 0 has won three of the seven events held at the track since that year and has also tallied finishes of second, fourth and fifth in three of the other races. His lone finish outside the top five came last April when he had charged from eighth to second, only to be collected in the incident between Walker and the lapped car. The Chico native will look for his first win of the season on Saturday at the always hooked-up 3/8 mile clay oval.
Golden State Challenge Rookie contender Kyle Larson comes into the weekend fresh off his first career series podium and goes into a track he was very successful at last year in Civil War Series competition. The 16 year-old Elk Grove resident scored a pair of third place finishes and also put together charges of 17th to fifth and 20th to eighth respectively in the four Civil War events held in Petaluma last season. Larson was very impressive last weekend in Tulare and goes into this Saturday sitting just nine points back of the three way tie for second as he looks for his first career GSC victory at the helm of the Vertullo Racing No. 83v.
Loomis racer Kyle Hirst will head into the night with confidence following his Civil War Series win at the Petaluma Speedway last Saturday. The 21 year-old tallied a pair of fourth place finishes last season with GSC in Petaluma and has finished fifth in his one series start this year aboard the GP Development No. 6. Hirst also had a very impressive run at the 3/8 mile clay oval last September with Civil War when he charged from 14th to second in the main event while driving the Ted Finkenbinder No. 3f.
Scotts Valley's Evan Suggs will go into Petaluma following his second fast-time effort of the season last weekend in Tulare. The 22 year-old driver will look to improve upon his 11th place finish the feature though as he currently sits 26 points behind Brent Kaeding for what will be the point lead come Saturday. Suggs last year drove his Suggs Racing No. 33e to a fifth place finish in the main event during the April visit to Petaluma.
After missing last weekend Campbell's Bud Kaeding is expected to be back in action this Saturday at the Petaluma Speedway. The 29 year-old competitor scored a seventh place finish last Saturday during a USAC National Sprint Car event at the Eldora Speedway and will look for a good run this week with the wing back atop the car in Petaluma. Kaeding raced to victory last April during the GSC stop at the 3/8 mile clay oval and will look for more of the same this weekend.
Other drivers expected this Saturday in Petaluma include two-time Silver Dollar Speedway track champion Stephen Allard of Chico, defending GSC Rookie of the Year Brent Bjork of Fremont, Petaluma Speedway track champ Alissa Geving of Penngrove, Ripon's Brandon Carey, Morgan Hill's Ricky Wright Jr., Fresno's Mike Stallings, Gilroy's Ken Fredenburg, Rio Vista's Dan Simpson, Petaluma home-boy Mike Mossi and more.
The box office for tickets is scheduled to open at 4:30 pm on Saturday with all seating being general admission. Adult tickets will be $16, juniors $12, seniors 65 and older $10 and children 5 and under free. The Petaluma Speedway is located at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds just off Highway 101 in Petaluma. Up next- The Golden State Challenge King of California 410 Sprint Car Series will head for its first event of the season at the racy Ocean Speedway next Saturday night April 25. The special Saturday show at the track will be the first of three stops for the series at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds facility this year.

Hey Gary, do you know who is going to be in the 83jr this weekend? A big thumbs up to Dennis Roth for keeping the car running in the GSC! We need all the cars we can get! :)

DITTO: WE NEED AND HOPE FOR A GREAT TURN OUT.
GARY IS AWESOME, HE DOES A GREAT JOB AND IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL IN KEEPING SPRINT CAR RACING BEFORE THE PUBLIC WITH HIS ELABORATE AND ACCURATE ACCOUNTING NIGHT AFTER NIGHT.
WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HIM IN THE BOOTH AT THE DIFFERENT TRACKS ANNOUNCING FOR US AS HE KNOWS AND CARES ABOUT THE DRIVERS. HE HAS TOTAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THEIR PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE AND WOULD COVER IT ALL IF GIVEN THE CHANCE, FITTING IT IN IN ADDITION TO ANNOUNCING WHAT WAS HAPPENING ON THE TRACK!

Petaluma Speedway hosts Golden State Challenge
The Golden State Challenge 410 Winged Sprint Car Series will make their first appearance of the season Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway. The potent sprint car series, considered the premier winged sprint car series on the west coast will headline a three-division show that includes the All-Pro Dwarf Cars and Mini Stocks.
The race will be the fourth of the year for the series that competes 24 times at 11 race tracks in Northern California and Oregon with more than 30 drivers expected to make qualifying at the lightening-quick three-eighths mile clay oval.
Thirteen-time series champion Brent Kaeding heads a stellar list of drivers and former champions that includes his son Tim Kaeding, Jonathon Allard, Sean Becker, Jason Statler, and Ronnie Day expecting to battle for the checkered flag. Brent Kaeding leads the series with 80 career victories and holds Petaluma Speedway's one-lap track record of 12.125 seconds. Tim Kaeding, with 41 career wins, tops the current point standings over Brent Kaeeding and defending series champion Jonathon Allard.
Gates open at 4:30 p.m., qualifying begins at 6 p.m. followed by heats, dashes, and main events. Admission prices are adults $16, juniors, $12, and seniors $10.
