Brian Brown – Bad Vibrations!

(Bill W) August 27, 2008 – Brian Brown found a little something to improve his lackluster qualifying as of late, and in turn, ran a strong feature event at the Knoxville Raceway. His third place feature finish may have been better, had a vibration not developed in the driveline. Nonetheless, it was a positive heading into this weekend's Season Championship Night festivities at Knoxville.

Brian timed in sixth quick in time trials, quite an accomplishment considering the struggles in the past couple of months. "We kind of figured out what was going wrong with the deal," says Brian. "It's a shame it took us so long to figure out. We didn't do anything different; it was just a minor thing that we figured out. Hopefully, that can cure our problem heading into next year. That was a big confidence booster."

Brian held his own in the heat, starting fifth and finishing there. Unfortunately, a problem kept him from further progress. "We had a bad vibration in the driveline, starting in the heat," he says. "We checked the gear, the ring and pinion, and all of that, and didn't find anything."

Starting outside row four for the 20-lap main event, and by lap seven, he was into the top five. The bad vibration continued. "We had the same vibration in the feature," he says. "We still haven't found the reason for it. Obviously, we weren't the fastest car there with (Mark) Dobmeier (who won) out front, but I felt without our problem, we were the second place car."

Indeed, Brian charged into second behind Dobmeier before a late restart with two laps to go. With Danny Lasoski behind him and the problem with the car, it was all Brian could do to hold onto third at the checkers in the Tim and Gina Doogs SuperClean #21. "I was kind of caught between a rock and a hard place on the last restart," he remembers. "I wasn't strong enough to go around Dobmeier on the high side…I would have finished third anyway. I took my chances on the bottom, and Danny got by on the high side. It would have been nice to try for the win without the vibration though."

The track stayed heavy again all night long. Though it was wide enough to pass, it remained fast for everyone. "I don't know what the deal with the track is this year," says a perplexed Brown. "The moisture seems to be coming up all night long. The bottom of turns one and two has been so good this year, and that throws the good stuff up towards the middle. You saw that on the last laps there, where Danny got by me for second. That was his fastest lap of the feature, and he went right through the middle."

Brian gets one more chance to win his first weekly feature at the "Sprint Car Capital of the World". "We haven't won a local show all year at Knoxville, and we're going to do our best to get that done on Saturday night," he says. "Then we'll hit either Lake Ozark or Bethany on Sunday."

Brian's Q&A

Rodney in Savannah, MO asks: This year you've raced side by side with your Uncle (Danny Lasoski) several times. Is it different dicing it up with him, than other drivers?

Brian answers: Not really. No matter who you race with, whether it's him, Billy Alley or Robert Bell, you know what their tendencies or characteristics are out there. You know what they do when they pass you, or are beside you. You put that in the memory bank and use it later on. Racing with Danny, you know he's thinking two laps ahead. He may not race you dirty, but he'll take the clean air from you for a corner. People who have raced with the Outlaws for as long as he has, do that sort of thing. It's always fun to race with him, and he seems to get the upper hand 99% of the time. We'll keep working, and hopefully, that will start to reverse.

Brown's Bits

On this day in 2005, Brian bested Billy Alley, Kerry Madsen, Ricky Logan and Justin Henderson for a well earned win at Knoxville. Brian has been on the Knoxville podium almost as much this year as last (7 in '08, 8 in '07), but the difference is in the wins. He was able to gather five total wins last year including three in a row in June and July. This year, he grabbed his first win on Friday of the Nationals. He has a better top ten record than last year at the famous half-mile, but not as many top fives. He is still in striking range of a third place point finish, but things would have to fall his way this Saturday!
