Terrell drives to fourth victory of the season in Petaluma All Pro Series feature event
By Bill Sullivan
PETALUMA, CA (8-23-08) - Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell powered his way to victory lane Saturday night in the All Pro Point Series sprint car feature event at Petaluma Speedway. The victory was 17-year-old Terrell’s fourth win of the 2008 racing season aboard the Terrell Racing owned, Argonaut Construction-Millhouse Glass sponsored #43 Maxim sprint car.
Terrell entered Saturday’s event, the final regular point race of the season at Petaluma Speedway, in the fifth place position in the point standings. Currently in his fourth consecutive year of sprint car racing, Terrell set his sights on a top finish early in the night to maintain his top five status in the series point standings. One additional point race remains at Petaluma Speedway which is a Civil War event on September 13th that also awards accumulative points in the All Pro Series standings.
With nineteen cars in competition, Terrell started his evening with a ninth place position in qualifying, turning a 13.217 second lap on the 3/8 mile track that was rough for all competitors as early as qualifying on Saturday night. Fellow competitor Brandon Davis of Rohnert Park was the fast qualifier of the night with a 12:762.
In heat racing competition, Terrell took to the track for the eight lap preliminary event starting in the fourth position. When the checkered flag flew, Terrell finished in second place, securing a good starting position within the inversion for the 25-lap feature event later in the evening.
When the field took to the track for the All Pro feature event, Terrell started started in the eighth position, on the outside of the fourth row. Davis started on the pole position with Roberto Kirby on the outside for the green flag.
As early as the opening lap, Terrell advanced into the fourth place position when Kirby and Bill Cornwell, who started fifth, spun and drew a caution flag. With no laps complete, the restart placed Terrell in the fourth place position on the outside of Penngrove’s Alissa Geving. When Geving was slowed by the rough track in turn four, Terrell passed for the position and continued to battle with veteran driver Craig Smith.
On the 13th lap of the race, Terrell advanced into second place behind Davis and the two young guns of the North Bay began to battle for the lead heading into lapped traffic. Terrell assumed the lead on the 14th lap and maintained it despite working his way into lapped traffic and a restart on the 19th lap of the race that placed Davis on his tail for the restart. At the checkered flag Terrell drove to his fourth victory ahead of Davis, Geving, Arvo Backholm and Smith.
With the victory, Terrell unofficially advances into the fourth position in the standings and trails Kirby by 8-points for the third position heading into the September 13th Civil War race and the final points race for the All Pro Series campaign. Terrell’s performance in the standings is quite noteworthy as he missed the first three point races of the season.
During Saturday’s event, Terrell’s #43 Maxim was powered by a new motor owned by team sponsor Jim Vanlare. Vanlare recently completed a 360 sprint car that will be a rental for future races and requested that Terrell run the motor Saturday night to test its performance. The result was a very fast car for Saturday’s event.
“I really want to thank Jim VanLare for giving me the opportunity to run his new motor tonight,” said Terrell. “It was great to get another win and give the motor a good showing with the win. Now we’ll take a week off and prepare for the Gold Cup Civil War race in Chico in a couple of weeks.”
Despite missing the first two races of the year, Terrell is 12th in the California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series which competes at five tracks for 15 different events throughout California. The next event take place Wednesday, September 3 at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico and is known as the “Pacific Sprint Cup” which opens the annual Gold Cup Race of Champions week.
