Geving rallies back from flat tire incident to claim sixth place in third to last All Pro Series feature event
By Bill Sullivan
PETALUMA, CA (8-16-08) – Saturday night, Penngrove’s Alissa Geving returned to her home track of Petaluma Speedway to continue her campaign for the 2008 All Pro Point Series season championship aboard her Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, Pit Stop USA, Auto Repairs Unlimited, Tillet Tool #3x sprint car. The event was the first of just three remaining in the series and once again the 16 year old lady racer displayed her ability to overcome adversity and rallied to a sixth place finish in the feature event.
In qualifying, Geving used her second lap around the 3/8mile Petaluma oval to turn a 13:424 second lap, good enough for eight place on the roster for the evening. The qualifying effort placed her in the fourth place starting position of her eight lap preliminary heat race for the evening.
With the Midget Lites in competition at Petaluma Speedway Saturday night, the track was extremely dry as the guest division had requested such. Geving made the best of the challenging surface. Geving advanced to third place by the second lap of the event but fell back to the fourth position when she struck a slick area of the track on the second to last lap. The finish secured a starting spot in the A-main, starting on the outside of the second row once again.
With the waving of the green flag, Geving advanced to the second position before completion of the first lap in the 25-lap event. Using a great deal of patience, Geving pursued leader Bradley Terrell for the first six laps of the race. On the seventh lap Terrell fell victim to the same slick spot on the track that Geving encountered earlier in the night and Geving was the benefactor, slipping into the lead as Terrell recovered to the second position and began setting his sights on Geving.
Ten laps into the race Geving and Terrell entered lapped traffic and Geving once again fell victim to the challenging area of the track when she unavoidably struck it in traffic and was sent up into the safety wall, causing a flat rear tire as she managed to maintain second place just as a yellow flag flew for Roberto Kirby who spun and stalled in a separate incident. The yellow flag allowed Geving to drive to the pit area where he crew quickly made the change and sent her back to the rear of the field.
In the 14 laps remaining, Geving charged her way back through the field as she knows she must keep second place point runner and former champion Art McCarthy in her sights to insure her point lead entering these final weeks. Geving did just that, earning the sixth place position at the waving of the checkered flag, just three positions behind McCarthy on a night there were 20 cars in the feature event.
“Tonight I have to really thank my crew for getting back out on the track so fast,” said Geving. “Points are so important right now with just two point races to go. I’m disappointed that I hit the wall. I was not sure if Bradley right on my tail and I made a mistake trying so hard to protect my position. I am so thankful I was able to come back for a good finish.”
On any given night, regardless if she wins, scores a top ten finish or even on the night where she suffers a damaging crash one thing is for sure, the fans at Petaluma Speedway love this third generation driver that shows true talent and the ability to succeed in the sport professionally. Saturday night, hundreds of those true fans that believe in the girl known as “Chicko” in the sport, flocked to Geving’s pit area once again to congratulate her on her rally back to sixth place.
“I want to thank all my fans who came down after the race,” said Geving. “They always make me feel good after a tough night. I also have to give a big thank you to my sponsors who have been helping me so much this season. It really helps and I appreciate everyone’s help. I’m happy or Bradley on his win tonight and my congrats to him as well.”
This coming Saturday, Geving will return to Petaluma Speedway for the penultimate point race of the season. On August 30th she is expected to make an appearance at Placerville Speedway for Performance Carpet Care Night and the final point race of the season there before heading to Silver Dollar in Chico on September 3 to compete in the annual Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational and the 55th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions.
