Geving holds off BK for Calistoga Civil War preliminary victory, places 13th in feature event

By Bill Sullivan

CALISTOGA, CA (8-9-08) – Sixteen-year-old Alissa Geving of Penngrove, continued her campaign for the 2008 Hoosier Tires Civil War Rookie of the Year title Saturday night with a successful visit to the famed Calistoga Speedway for the 11th segment of the 15 race series for winged 360 cubic inch powered sprint cars. Geving maintained her sixth place status in the series point standings aboard her Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, Pit Stop USA, Auto Repairs Unlimited, Tillet Tool #3x sprint car with a victory in preliminary competition followed by a 13th place finish in the 20 –lap feature event.

“I’m really happy with the way our night went at Calistoga,” said Geving, who suffered a damaging crash in the previous visit there this season. “Winning the heat race was awesome, I love racing with Brent Kaeding and we had a great race tonight. I would have liked to finish higher in the feature but I’m happy we ended the night with the car in good condition and gained a few more points for the rookie title.”

After a disappointing qualifying effort, Geving made up for it her eight lap preliminary heat race. Powering her Gary Geving powered Maxim to the head of the field, Geving raced wheel to wheel the driver that is second on the all time winners list at the famed half mile track, Brent Kaeding of Campbell. Geving wowed the hometown crowd racing side by side with Kaeding at times to score the preliminary victory that not only secured a starting spot in the upcoming A-feature, but garnered another 5 championship points in the series standings where she leads the contest for the Rookie of the Year title.

In the feature event, Geving started deep in the field, on the outside of the 8th row in the 16th place starting position. Using great patience and finesse on the track that is known as one of California’s most dangerous and intimidating tracks, Geving held a steady line in traffic and advanced towards the front. When the dust settled in the event that was hampered by dry conditions, the driver known best as “Chicko” to her friends and colleagues was smiling beneath the helmet as she finished 13th, one position ahead of her friendly rookie rival Myles Bishop and most importantly, with the car in one piece after a night on the track that is known for its ability to “tear you up” with the slightest of errors.

“In the last race at Calistoga I was moving up really well and ended up in an accident that damaged the car pretty bad,” said Geving. “We’ve had our share of unfinished races these past couple of weeks and tonight my first goal was to make the feature. My second one was to finish it and anything above that would be the icing on the cake. I’m happy with how we did. I really want to thank my Mom and my Dad for all their support and my entire crew for a great car tonight.”

This Saturday, Geving will return to her home town track of Petaluma Speedway to continue her campaign for the 2008 All Pro Point Series winged sprint car championship. Geving is eying her first track title this season and has three remaining point races with a 40-point lead over veteran driver Art McCarthy. Geving will continue to appear at Petaluma Speedway in the coming weeks. On August 30th she is expected to make an appearance at Placerville Speedway for Performance Carpet Care Night and the final point race of the season there before heading to Silver Dollar in Chico on September 3 to compete in the annual Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational and the 55th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions.
