"Back when I raced, the King's Royal was the big deal," Nace said. "It paid $50,000 and it was the talk of Sprint Car racing.

"Now, races will pay $10,000 or more and you won't even think about it. Heck the other night at Williams Grove Speedway they gave away $25,000."

Nace said the most he ever won was $6,000 in a 1987 race at Lincoln Speedway.

The beauty of the No. 6 team, besides its inspirational team, is the fiduciary approach it takes towards racing.

Last year, it competed in 11 races, mainly high paying, time-trial events.

"I figured out it takes $2,300 average per night from the time you drop the trailer gate until you load it back up," Nace said. "We made some money last year by racing in only 11 shows, but we wouldn't have unless we won the $30,000."

Nace said the team plans to head west to the Knoxville Nationals as long as the team has a good weekend at Port Royal Speedway.

"This part time gig fits me pretty good," Nace said. "I'm busy with the business, plus I'm getting old."

That statement brings a chuckle from both.

"I'm don't mind being the middle man in Sprint Car racing," Nace said. "I'm not going to be the Daddy by spending a lot of money to win $3,000. I still look at this sport as a business and that's how you need to approach it."

As for us and many others, we view Nace as an inspiration.

And that's something that's lacking these days.
