Kinser Takes A Main Thursday Night

from Knoxville Raceway

Knoxville, IA – Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Indiana won the rain-delayed second night of qualifying feature Thursday night at the Knoxville Nationals. The program didn't get green flag for qualifying until 10:30 p.m. Kinser, the defending National Champion, led all but the first two laps of the twenty-lap event ahead of Ron Shuman, the only other race leader. Kinser commented after the race that things felt right. His sweep of the qualifying events Thursday earned the Hoosier the pole for the 30-lap Championship race Saturday.

Danny Smith definitely proved the gambling instinct of "The Gambler". Smith scratched his first night efforts that were a respectable 6th place of the opening qualifiers. The risk paid off as Smith bettered himself to third of the Thursday qualifying cars and the fourth in combined points.

Ron Shuman made a move on Smith on the last lap to gain the second spot. Rounding out the top finishers were Shane Carson, Terry Doss, Jeff Swindell and Don Reiners.

During time trials, Larry Aszmus of Anchorage, Alaska, began bicycling his sprint car as he entered the first turn. Aszmus was taken to a Knoxville Hospital and transferred to Des Moines Mercy Hospital for treatment of an arm injury. Kinser was the fastest of the forty-five entries with a clocking of 20.443.

Preliminary racing action saw Mike Peters of Wichita, Kansas, Danny Smith of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Bob Geldner of St. Peter, Minnesota and Kinser receiving wins. The B main was won by Leonard Lee of El Cajon, California, ahead of John McCoy of Knoxville.

Hard to believe that steve kinser and danny smith are the only two still racing some twenty seven years later. Nice pictures but they are missing something!

Only two?

Jac Haudenschild celebrates 35 years of racing in 2008.

Jeff Swindell been busting out a 360 cu. in. season at the "Ditch" in 2008.

Sammy Swindell still racing from time-to-time in 2008.

Rocky Hodges and Jack Hewitt have been spotted competing in "one-nighters" this year.

Albeit, not a Sprint, but Ken Schrader runs the fendered thingy in the dirt.

Take a minute and remember the seemingly high number guys no longer with us from that race result...
