Austin McCarl – Top Five!
(Bill W) July 8, 2008 – It was a race of another "first" for 15 year old Austin McCarl. Seeing his first action after getting his motor back in the Janet Holbrook #17 machine, Austin scored a top five finish with the Sprint Invaders Association at the West Liberty Raceway in West Liberty, Iowa last Saturday night.
Though the draw didn't go well, but Austin drove from fifth to fourth in his heat race. He wanted a bit more. "I made a bit of a mistake in the heat," he says. "I thought I should have run third."
Lap time has proven instrumental in the Altoona, Iowa youngster's development, and he showed maturity on the big half-mile oval on Saturday. "I took my time and started moving around a bit, racing the racetrack and seeing where it was good and where it wasn't," he says.
As he calculated his next moves, he climbed from ninth to the top five in the main event. "Early on, I was good on the top of one and two and the bottom of three and four," says Austin. "As the race wore on, the track is so wide and the cushion almost got to the fence. That's when the bottom became a better option so we headed down there and it started to take rubber just a little towards the end."
The fifth place finish marked the best in his young sprint car career. The rookie is quick to thank all those who help him. "The night went good, and the car felt good," he says. "We got the motor back late last week…it was just good to get back on the track. I'd like to thank my grandpa Lenard for all his hard work again."
This week, the Sprint Invaders have a pair of events, and Austin will be there. On Friday night, it will be the Lee County Speedway for the fair race in Donnellson, Iowa, and on Sunday it will be the Cedar County Speedway in Tipton, Iowa.
When Austin makes a feature, we'll do a release for him. Call it some motivation of sorts. If you'd like to be included via e-mail, shoot one to [email protected] with "Austin" in the subject line.
Austin would like to thank Janet Holbrook, Lenard, Big Game Treestands, DeBerg Concrete, AmericashAdvance.com, Jack L. Anderson Auto Body and Goodyear Tires for all their help!
