New Egypt, NJ: Modified standout Billy Pauch won the Tobias SpeedSTR presented by Weikel Racewear Tour 20-lap feature on Saturday at New Egypt Speedway, in the inaugural appearance for the open-cockpit division at the clay track. Pauch was in the no. 98 of his long-time friend Ray Evernham.
Teenager Billy VanInwegen led early, before Pauch raced from his sixth place starting spot to take command on lap three. After out dueling VanInwegen, and Nick Pecko, Rich Tobias began to challenge Pauch for top honors. He cleared Pauch on the backstretch after a late race restart, only to have Pauch battle back to take the lead by turn one. Pecko the re-passed Tobias, gaining second at the checkered gaining his third "podium" finish in a row. Tobias was scored third followed by VanInwegen. Former New Egypt Modified regular Jim Sherer got turned around during the mid-point of the race, but came back to finish an impressive fifth.
