Placerville Speedway; taking it to the streets with several pre-race events on July 4th

Various car and driver appearances will take place throughout the county on holiday 

ELDORADO COUNTY (7-4-08) – The business community of El Dorado County is showing its true colors and support for local auto racing this Friday, July 4th as various drivers and their cars will be on hand at local establishments. The numerous events will all conclude with a big night of racing and fireworks at Placerville Speedway.

The community outreach effort is geared to promote the US Army July Fourth Spectacular at Placerville Speedway Friday evening, an event that welcomes families to the El Dorado County fairgrounds to celebrate the holiday watching America’s most popular spectator sport, auto racing on one of Northern California’s most popular dirt tracks – Placerville Speedway.

“Auto Racing on the Fourth of July is a four decade tradition at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds,” explains Placerville Speedway Communications Director Bill Sullivan. “Our sport is about family entertainment. On this particular holiday there is nothing more Americana then small town racing and fireworks. This year we’re taking it to the streets to give the public a closer look of what we are really about.”

Throughout the day on Friday area race fans, families and children will have the opportunity to see a number of cars that will be in competition at Placerville Speedway later in the evening and meet the drivers that are heroes to today’s young race fans. Many youngsters never get the opportunity to see a race car up close and meet the driver at the track to get an autograph. Friday, July fourth they have the opportunity to do so from Cameron Park to Pollock Pines.

Over half a dozen drivers will be on hand during the day Friday with their race cars. From until , Placerville’s Andy Gregg and Alissa Geving, the 16-year-old lady racer will be on hand with their cars on display at the main entrance into Food 4 Less in Cameron Park. Located at

, Food 4 Less is three years stong in their support of Placerville Speedway, awarding nearly $3,000 annually in grocery contingencies to drivers and spectators. Both Gregg and Geving will be giving away patriotic stickers to children that stop by as well as autographed hero cards.

Across the highway in Cameron Park three of Placerville Speedway’s Pure Stock racers are expected to be on hand in front of Belair Supermarket, located at 3510 Palmer drive. Cameron Park’s Jared Vilt, the current top contender for the Pure Stock rookie of the year title at Placerville Speedway will be on hand in the company of two former division champions. Jason Englund of Citrus Heights, the 2007 Pure Stock champion is expected with his #77 stock car along with Tom Tilford of Citrus Heights, the 2006 division champion. All three drivers will be signing autographs and presenting youngsters with patriotic stickers courtesy of Placerville Speedway.

Further up the highway in Pollock Pines, Placerville Speedway will be well represented in the annuall Pollock Pines Independence Day Parade on Pony Express trail. In this event, the Placerville Speedway pace vehicle will be featured and will be followed by popular Placerville driver James Sweeney, driver of the #20j sprint car and the 2006 track rookie of the year. It is expected Sweeney will be joined by additional sprint car drivers for the event that begins at at the east end of Pony Express trail.

“We want to thank the area businesses and all the drivers that have commited to these events,” added Sullivan. “Having a race car on a corner in town goes a long way in public relations. There are many people that move here and don’t realize what is racing in their own backyard. We always gain new fans with this type of outreach. Taking the extra time to do this on a holiday with us is greatly appreciated.”

Friday night July 4th the US Army and Gold County Limousines will come together to present the 2008 Indpendence Day Spectacular at Placervlle Speedway. This is the first time in track history that this holiday event will carry a title sponsor as it operates in conjunction with the annual Family Blast at the El Dorado County fairgrounds. The Sprint car feature will pay $2000 to on this night with additional bonus funds going the the top three finishers. Both the Pure Stock and Pro Stock divisions will receive $200 in bonus winnings and the top five finishers in each of the two divisions will receive added funs.

The evening will include a special opening ceremony feature the military color guard, local singer Shawna Granade performing the national anthem and a flyover has been slated by the US Army following the anthem, pending weather and smoke conditions. The night will conclude with a giant fireworks display sponsored by Placerville Speedway and El Dorado County Fair Association. For further information please visit www.placervillespeedway.com.
