Austin McCarl – Hawkeye Buckeye!

(Bill W) June 10, 2008 – Two features made…two top tens. Austin McCarl kept that little streak going last Saturday night at Waynesfield Motorsports Park near Waynesfield, Ohio. The Altoona, Iowa fifteen year old scored a tenth place finish, duplicating his standing at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa in May. Austin is in his first year of sprint car racing, and drives Ohio native Janet Holbrook's #17.

Initially, the plan was to run Friday at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima. The race was lost to weather, but Austin did get some practice time in. "It was fun at least getting to hot lap there," says Austin. "Unfortunately, Janet missed the hot laps, but it was good to have here there both days. She was excited with how things went at Waynesfield."

It was on to Waynesfield on Saturday, and Austin started well, by running third in his heat race from outside row two. "It went o.k.," he says. "The track was pretty heavy all night. It was a pretty small track. It reminded me of English Creek Speedway (south of Knoxville and the site of his Micro-Sprint track championship in 2007)."

There was no rest for the weary on a tacky track in the main event. "It was crazy," says Austin. "I think it was 25 laps and it went green to checker non-stop. It was a good test for my conditioning. It was heavy, and I mostly ran the bottom."

Austin held his own, and stayed up in the seat for a tenth place finish after starting outside row four. "I moved around a bit, passed some cars and got passed too," he remembers. "There were about five of us in a pack, and we spent most of the race just racing each other. We were spread out at first, but it got kind of narrow in lapped traffic, and we had to race each other. It was a lot of fun."

Did the youngster know who he was racing with? "To tell you the truth, I knew none of them, but hopefully in the future we can travel back out there again," he says. "Again I'd like to thank Lenard, Uncle Kenny, Jimmy Hannifin, Janet and all of our sponsors for all their help on this trip."

An ambitious schedule is planned this week as tentatively the team is running in Sedalia, Missouri in Winged Outlaw Warriors competition where they will be running as support for the World of Outlaws. On Friday, US36 Speedway west of Cameron, Missouri will be staging the $2000 to win Bud Shootout.

When Austin makes a feature, we'll do a release for him. Call it some motivation of sorts. If you'd like to be included via e-mail, shoot one to [email protected] with "Austin" in the subject line.

Austin would like to thank Janet Holbrook, Lenard, Big Game Treestands, DeBerg Concrete, AmericashAdvance.com, Jack L. Anderson Auto Body and Goodyear Tires for all their help!
