I usually don't try to get political on here but I thought this is something that racing fans, who are among the most patriotic of any block of people, would understand better than most. Enjoy.

Jay Leno wrote this; it's the Jay Leno we don't often see....

As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.
'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe.  It must be true given the  source, right?
The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with  the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is  unhappy with the performance of the President.  In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.  So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?'
A.. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day,  7 Days a week?
B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?
C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
D.. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time  and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?
E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move  through each state?
F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?
G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from  around the world is just not good enough either.
          H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.
I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.
J.. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.
K.. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.
L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents.  Neighborhoods where  90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.
M.. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.
Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen.  No wonder the world loves the U.S.,  yet has a great disdain for its citizens.  They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.
I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out?   The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11?   The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession?   Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks?  The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?
Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show?  Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad?   Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.  Make no mistake about it.
The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom.  There is currently no draft in this country.  They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a 'general' discharge, an 'other than honorable' discharge or, worst case scenario, a 'dishonorable' discha rge after a few days in the brig.
So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?
Say what you want but I blame it on the media.   If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news.  Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts.  How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations.  They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their  actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!
Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage.  Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is expodentially more good than bad.  We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.'  'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'
              Jay Leno

Sidenote: I don't care what side of the political sprectrum you support...this is what it means to be an American.

Let's add to your list.

1. At the current rate of the national debt, each household in the united states would have to pony up $445,000 to cover the debt.

2. With the baby boomer generation heading into retirement, my generation is on the hook to them for approximately $500,000 each due to all of the bullshit promises made to them by politicians over the last 40 or so years. I'll pay into social security my whole life but won't see a dime.

3. Yes, I'm a patriot and appreciate every thing that the people that have served in the war has done for all of us. I've had the pleasure of knowing 2 of them personally. They were both wounded in action and along with their physical injuries both of them now suffer from extreme bouts of depression. At one time I could have a nice, pleasant conversation with both of them. Now, I have to approach them with extreme caution and both of them were denied medical care and benefits after they came home. When asked, both of them will tell you that they have no idea why they were sent to the asshole of the earth to fight.

4. As americans we have the right to bitch and complain. It's guaranteed by the constitution so I'd get used to it if I were you.

5. There are people in certain "urban" areas of this country that have never worked a damn day of their life, pump out illigitimate children quicker than you can blink your eyes and traffic drugs and a loser culture to our young people that drive better cars than most of the honest working population will ever be able to afford, live for free in housing paid for with honest peoples tax money and are free to spout hate and bigotry because they are not subject to the same principles of "political correctness" that the rest of us are. It works both ways.

I could go on and on as I'm sure that a lot of people could. I'll probably get slammed for posting this but so be it.

Yes Duane, lets remember. 1968 was 40 years ago. Counting each 4 year term as a seperate president it's 7-3 republicans. The state I live in more often than not votes republican. We've had a 20% reduction in manufacturing jobs during the current republican's reign in the oval office and the job that I had spent over 10 years at just closed its doors 3 weeks ago. Business was booming in the 90's when I started there. Our downfall started well before the current democratic controlled congress was in power. Please tell me who has run us into the ground again please?

Next thing I know, I will be hearing that Bush signed the NAFTA bill.

One must remember WHO writes the laws in this country.

Both sides are guilty. I now quote from the wikipedia article concerning that nasty little piece of legislation. Choke on it rightys. Your boys had more to do with it than the limp wristed lil' faggots on the other side did.

"NAFTA was initially pursued by politicians in the United States and Canada supportive of free trade, led by Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, U.S. President George H. W. Bush, and the Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari. The three countries signed NAFTA in December 1992, subject to ratification by the legislatures of the three countries. There was considerable opposition in all three countries. In the United States, NAFTA was able to secure passage after Bill Clinton made its passage a major legislative priority in 1993. Since the agreement had been signed by Bush under his fast-track prerogative, Clinton did not alter the original agreement, but complemented it with the aforementioned NAAEC and NAALC. After intense political debate and the negotiation of these side agreements, the U.S. House of Representatives passed NAFTA on November 17, 1993, by 234-200 vote (132 Republicans and 102 Democrats voting in favor; 43 Republicans, 156 Democrats, and 1 independent against),[7] and the U.S. Senate passed it on the last day of its 1993 session, November 20, 1993, by 61-38 vote (34 Republicans and 27 Democrats voting in favor; 10 Republicans and 28 Democrats against, with 1 Democrat opponent not voting -- Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND), an ardent foe of NAFTA, missed the vote because of an illness in his family)."

NAFTA has been a boom for some states, a disaster for others. Ask yourself is your state's corporate tax situation competitive. Many northern and midwestern states add unnecessary and burdonsome tax rates that put them in a competitive disadvantage to attract business. And that is not W's fault.

Well if we plan to keep all those great things listed we better go in a different direction. We will be a 2nd world county soon if we keep doing many of the things we keep doing in government and big business outsourcing.

I do believe it is Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn that are coming out with a movie where they lose there jobs to Mexico and move down there to keep there jobs. Called 'Outsourced'

hell i wont blast you for it - i agree in general although there are a couple details there i disagree slightly on.

but in response to JK's post. i think people are pissed because they are finally understanding the threat to all those good things you mentioned. man as a country we have come a long way on many things - and provided quite the life for many of its citizens. but allowing an administration to sling propaganda to get in a war that makes the rich and hell of a lot more rich and powerful - while at the same time chipping away at the middle class - it is in some ways a threat to our way of life. there are no bigger terrorists than ourselves (to us i mean) - we are sometimes our own worst enemy. this was why many things were created in such a way to lessen corruption. as with greed anyways - people of course find ways around it. but i think many are pissed about - of all things - the news. its becoming more and more obvious that it is bought and paid for and we are kind of being manipulated. so many more understand now how it happened back in 2003. its just not a good future for anyone who makes less than 100k a year as well as future generations. not just because we elected some traitors - but because its getting to be very clear where the problems really lie - and how little you can do short of the extreme to change it. its not about living presidents - but about dead ones. dead presidents - MONEY. with the majority of the power being in corporate hands - that doesn't bode well for anything less than upper class. both political parties are so deep into corporate shit - what do we do? even the tools we use to try and learn about things - are completely influenced. any news source on TV is bought and paid for. this comes abundantly clear when they issue economy forecasts. i mean its like enron except it is our country. every time a forecast is issued - it is proved to be wayyyyy off within 2 weeks - so then they predict it a little bit higher. and then higher and then higher. they dont just come out and say - that on our current path - we are screwed. because it is not in corporate interest to say that.

Want example of a VICIOUS CIRCLE. try this. oil was starting to pull back slightly after may 22. then the un-employment report came out. chech this shit out. it rose a full half percent - the largest gain in 22 years. jobs were cut and slashed mostly in response to higher gas prices. because corporations will not accept less profit - or at least the idea of it - they find other ways hint hint. damn it back to my vicious circle. it will continue to repeat itself. gas goes up - jobs get slashed - in response to jobs gettin slashed - dollar value drops - dollar value drops - gas goes up - more jobs slashed - dollar drops more - gas goes up.

I generally agree with the conservative idea of less government - but someone will have to stepin to at least stop the trend. the market will not do it on its own. we owe this problem with the dollar in many ways to the war in iraq. it accelerated the issue. there were other things no doubt - but that was the kicker. so we basically are screwed - and why - because this administration campaigned to go to war and make money for their friends. bush aint stupid - neither is Cheney or Karl Rove - they knew all this was going to happen - and wanted it to. if wandering why - search OIL COMPANY RECORD PROFITS. and it becomes fairly clear. what they counted on and were correct on - was that the american people had no backbone to stop em from doing it - especially when we bought into the whole al-qaeda in iraq BS - - - but even tho most see through it now - they see that instead of being held accountable - they are given mostly a free pass on account of they will be gone soon. people are more worried about economy than iraq - and are stupid to see that in many ways they have been and will continue to be one in the same.

so your saying the reason the gas prices are going up is because the major corporations are cutting jobs not because speculators are buying oil futures from OPEC in record numbers and for record amounts?
