Myers Brothers Racing scores a top five on Friday night of Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial weekend
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – May 19, 2008…The Myers Brothers Racing team very nearly had a perfect night this past Friday during the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial weekend at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway. Mason Myers continued his consistent season while Cody had another night of tough luck as rear end issues took away a possible top five run.
A total of 19 wingless sprint cars were in action this past Friday during the eighth Feather Falls Casino point race at the Silver Dollar bullring. Going into the event Mason sat third in points and Cody continued to run fifth in the standings.
Mason drew an outside front row starting spot in the opening heat race and he immediately jumped into the lead aboard the Browns Valley Truck and RV No. 3m wingless sprinter. The young 17 year-old had no problems out front and went on to pick up his second heat race win of the year at the Chico track.
Cody drew a third row starting spot for his heat race and lined up in the fifth position in the second 10 lap contest. The Silver Dollar Speedway clay remained moist and hooked up despite very warm day-time temps that reached into the triple digits. Myers jumped into fourth at the start and spent much of the race applying heavy pressure to third running Kody Smith. With passing chances limited Myers settled for a fourth place finish.
The 20 lap wingless spec sprint main event saw Mason start from the pole position and Cody lined up in eighth. At the waving of the green flag Mason settled into second and Cody began his charge forward by putting the No. 9 sprinter into fifth by the time a caution appeared on the second lap. Cody was poised for a good run but unfortunately a problem in the rear end around the midway point put him out of the race while running a strong top five.
Mason proceeded to have a solid run in the main event as he utilized a beautiful cross over off the second corner during the lap two restart and claimed the lead from current point leader Keith Bloom Jr. The move didn’t last long however, as a caution came out before a lap could be completed and he was forced to go back to second. Myers didn’t let that deter him though and used the same move on the restart to take the lead and put the No. 3m machine out front.
Myers held the top spot until hitting a rut in turn four, which allowed Bloom to get back by. The two drivers ran nose to tail over the next handful of laps before veteran Terry Shank was able to slip under Myers for second on lap 15. The youngster wasn’t done yet and sliced back by Shank a split second later to hang onto the runner-up spot. The two would battle it out over the next few until Shank got back by with just a couple laps left. Myers hung on and crossed the stripe in third to record his fifth top five finish of the season.
The action will continue this Saturday night at Silver Dollar Speedway with another Feather Falls Casino point race. The Myers Brothers Racing team continue to hold onto a pair of top five spots in the standings with Mason currently in third and Cody in fifth. Both have shown the speed this year and appear to be closing in on that first win of the season. This weekend’s action at the Chico track will also be part of the annual Silver Dollar Fair. Please stop by the rig after the races to say hi.
