PLACERVILLE, CA –During his racing career, Colfax resident Colby Wiesz has driven for very few different car owners. The majority of his career has been spent behind the wheel of his family owned team prior to filling in for David Robinson Jr. for 2006-2007 with the FnF Racing Team.
This year, the multi-time MarysvilleRacewayPark track champion has teamed with veteran car owner John Taylor and just five races into the season the duo obviously proves to be a perfect blend of talent and commitment. This Saturday they return to Placerville Speedway to maintain their point lead in the 2008 New Car Dealers of El Dorado County, Hoosier Racing Tires, Coors Light Championship event of the season.
“John Taylor gave me a great opportunity this year,” said Wiesz. ‘This team gives me all the best stuff I need to run up front. They are consistent and that’s what wins championships, consistency.”
While Wiesz has won titles at the Marysville track in his career, Taylor has earned three titles as a car owner, winning two Placerville championships and a Civil War title with Greg DeCaires behind the wheel. Prior to joining Taylor’s team, Wiesz frequented Placerville on a regular basis and has spent the last three years running the quarter mile on a weekly basis.
“This place is just awesome, said Wiesz. ‘It’s a good place to win because it’s a hard place to win. Qualifying is the most important thing at Placerville”
Wiesz has finished five races in the championship series this year and has finished each of them very well with a top five finish each night, including a feature win. In the most recent event Wiesz suffered damage in his heat race, transferred through a semi-feature and then drove from19th to fifth in the feature event.
“I try my hardest to keep my nose clean in every race,” added Wiesz. “I learned that long ago racing with my dad because you have to finish a race before you can win a race.”
Wiesz enters Saturday’s Hoosier Racing Tires event with a 17-point lead over David Robinson of Foresthill who has three top five finishes and sits 20-points in front of Andy Forsberg, a three time winner here. Placerville’s Jimmy Trulli is in fourth place, just 22-points out of the lead while defending champion Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove rounds out the top five ahead of locals Scott Russell and Justin Johnson.
In the Corona Extra Pure Stock division, Brian Stevens of Pollock Pines leads the division point standings with a 10-point lead over Rick Grunert of Woodland. Danielle Clauson of Placerville is amidst her career best season. Clauson sits third in the standings, just 27-points out of the lead. Jared Vilt of Cameron Park is the top rookie contender in this division, sitting fourth and Keith Fournier of Placerville in fifth place, 39-points out of the lead.
The Arnolds for Awards Pro Stock division at Placerville Speedway continues to lack in the weekly car counts with last weeks total of nine late model style stock cars forming the program. The racing action, however, is some of the best in the sport. Dan Brown Jr. of NevadaCity currently leads the standings in this division with an 18-point lead over Jeff Arbogast of Auburn. Placerville’s own Forryst Carnett is third overall over Ray Trimble of Auburn, Dennis Armstong of El Dorado and Del Tremblay of Camino.
