Geving caps Civil War opener with strong eighth place finish in Placerville semi feature

By Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE, CA (4-9-08) – Penngrove’s Alissa Geving began her 2008 Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Series tour Wednesday night at Placerville Speedway during an event that certainly lived up to it’s name of “Wild Winged Wednesday.” The visit was just Geving’s second Placerville Speedway appearance of her young career and the 16-year-old rising star ended her night with a strong eighth place finish in the semi-main event aboard the Chick-O-Motorsports, Pit Stop USA #3X sprint car.

Following a mad dash to Placerville Speedway directly from UrslineHigh School, Geving arrived at the track just in time to join the 42-car field for wheel packing and hot laps for the special weeknight event. With the much appreciated guidance and advice from former Civil War champion Mike Henry in the pit area, Geving and the Chick-O-Motorsports team made the needed adjustments for Placerville’s high banked bullring, which differs greatly from the much flatter Petaluma Speedway she is familiar with.

In qualifying, Geving only timed in for one lap, clocking in the 32nd position. On the second circuit she drifted high in the second turn and elected to drive to the pit area to make the needed adjustments for the upcoming heat races.

In the fourth 10-lap heat race of the night, Geving started in the eighth place position. A slow start by several cars in the front of the field forced Geving to slow as she exited the opening turn to avoid a collision with seventh place starter Richard Bailey and Willie Croft of Sacramento. Once the field spread out Geving began charging her way towards the front in the hunt for a top four finish to avoid the grueling semi-main event later in the program.

After passing Bailey and Croft, Geving went on to overtake Peter Breshears and crash victim Christian Stover in the preliminary event. At the waving of the checkered flag she finished in the fifth position, just one spot out of the transfer position which forced her to compete in the 12-lap B-main event.

Despite the qualifying run and the near miss in her heat race, Geving applied her always positive attitude to her efforts in the semi-feature event. She started deep in the field, in the 16th position with only 12 laps being the scheduled distance of the event. It was in this event that Geving’s comfort level became apparent as she charged her way toward the front of the field, avoiding multiple incidents and rollovers that took place throughout the race.

Using both the high line and the low line of the track, Geving sliced and diced her way through the field and was charging towards the front late in the event. On the white flag lap she was in a heated battle with Calistoga driver Mike Benson for the seventh place alternate position, nearly passing Benson on the backstretch before the veteran driver closed the door on her effort to maintain the spot. At the finish line Geving finished a strong eighth place behind winner Andy Forsberg, Colby Wiesz, Willie Croft, Kyle Hirst, Matt Petty, Greg DeCaires and Benson, all weekly to contenders at Placerville Speedway.

With Placerville Speedway’s event in the history books, Geving and the Chick-O-Motorsports Team will now head back home to Petaluma Speedway this Saturday as the Civil War Series continues it campaign with the second of 15 races at six different California tracks. Recently Geving has scored two consecutive top three finishes on her home track during the weekly All Pro Series, finishing third in the opener two weeks ago and second last Saturday night.
