Moore battles for top 10 at Chico opener

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – April 4, 2008…Second year sprint car racer Mason Moore hung in during a feature filled with attrition on Friday night and recorded a top 10 finish during the opening point race at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway.

The 17 year-old had a double-header baseball game scheduled for earlier in the day in Hayfork and had planned to catch a flight from the game to get to Chico, but the flight didn’t work out and he was forced to miss the second game to drive back and be at the track in time to compete.

After qualifying within the inversion, Moore then lined up on the outside front row in heat race number four aboard the Rolling Hills Casino, Moore Insurance Services No. 22. The Princeton driver got the jump and was able to lead the first four laps before Jonathan Allard got by for the lead. Moore remained focus however, and drove the final four laps to finish third and transfer into the main event.

The Silver Dollar Speedway bullring had remained hooked up all night and various rough spots had developed giving it an “old school Chico” feel. Lining up 17th on the grid Moore was hanging in before having to pit during a red flag situation on lap nine to change a flat tire. He was able to get back out and drove his way forward to get back up to a 10th place finish by the checkered flag in the NOS Energy Drink, Selovers Paint & Body Shop No. 22. The main event had been scheduled for 25 laps, but with time being a factor it was shortened to 20 to allow all the night's action to be done by the 11 pm curfew.

Moore and the team will return to Silver Dollar Speedway next Friday night for the rescheduled Tribute to Bill Brownell night. The 410 sprint car main event will pay $3,000 to win and the night is sponsored by Chico Custom Cycles, Pro Pool Tile Cleaning and John and Robbie Padjen. Seven-time track champ Shane Scott is set to drive a second Moore Racing team car for the evening of action.

In addition to the rescheduled Bill Brownell night, Moore will also be in action on Wednesday for the rescheduled Civil War Series season opener at the Placerville Speedway. Last season Moore was co-rookie of the year in Civil War with good friend Kyle Larson
