1st off - I'm glad as everyone else is that it appears most are ok there. although that remains to be determined for sure - hope everyone is ok as can be after that.
tornadoes are nothing new for many - especially here in OK. but I found something very odd about last nights storm.
At the Georgia Dome - Alabama hit a buzzer beating 3 pointer to tie the game and send it to overtime (against Miss. St.) - it was about halfway through the 5 minute overtime when that tornado hit. considering short intermission and some foul shots and stuff. that was probably rough 10-15 minutes from the shot that sent the game to overtime. so get this - there was still 1 more SEC quarterfinal game to be played afterwards - but many of those folks woulda been leaving after the Bama-Miss. St. game.
had Bama missed that shot. A LOT of those people woulda been just leaving the Georgia Dome and en route to their cars or such. probably a couple thousand at least.
Alabama's season may be over (they lost in overtime). But had that guy missed that shot a very scary incident could have been catastrophic instead. that a hindsight type of thing. but whereas Bama hangs their head for losing - that shot probably saved a BUNCH of lives. I'm very suprised there hasn't been any stories bout that part of it yet. that game ends in regulation and a lot of people woulda been leaving the Georgia Dome at that time. No possible way that fella who hit that shot coulda known it - but he probably saved many lives. I don't bout others - but I appreciate life's unsung heroes...............
on a side note: The National Weather Service is great and they do extremely valuable work - as I'm sure folks at the Georgia Dome do as well. But the tornado warning was issued 5 minutes before it hit that area. that isn't long I know. but I am really suprised there wasn;t some sort of contact between authorities and officials or whatever. it's like no one even knew. that ain't good. this right in a hgihly populated with 2 arenas holding tens of thousands of folks - in a downtown of a major US city. there coulda potentially been a bunch of folks unknowingly walkin right out into a tornado........ in hindsight it seems calamity was averted and thats awesome, I just can't understand why city officials weren't immediately in touch with offcials at both highly attended basketball events. it reminds me of bout 10 years ago I was at OKC hockey game - and during an intermission was gonna go outside and smoke - and security wouldn't let anyone leave b/c there was a tornado right overhead. my dad could see it from bout 4 miles north and said it was profound. but I was very appreciative of the communication of all parties involved that day. maybe there are more communications lessons to learned from what happened in Atlanta? thankfully it won't be at the price of human life at either of the 2 basketball events (NBA and NCAA).
this just kinda made me wonder bout the things above - anybody else have any thoughts?
