NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – When Punxutawney Phil has made the headlines it means one thing to area sprint car racing fans and drivers. It means spring is just a few weeks away and along with it comes the opening round of the 2008 Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series.
The Civil War Series is California's premier traveling series for winged 360 cubic inch powered sprint cars. The series is managed by Roseville based John Padjen Motorsports, with the cooperation of the participating tracks in the series.
The 2008 campaign will feature 15 races at six different tracks throughout Northern California between the months of March and October. Each event will boast more that $15,000 in winnings excluding contingencies and over $20,000 in championship winnings under the title sponsorships of Hoosier Tires West. Hoosier is the official racing tire of the Civil War Series and its participating tracks.
The Civil War campaign will open at Placerville Speedway on March 15 and with it will come dozens of talented drivers that are sure to make the series opener one of the most competitive events in recent history. Top names like Tim Kaeding, Brandon Wimmer, and Tyler Walker are just a trio of talented speed junkies that are expected to be among the 40 some drivers expected to converge at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds on opening race day one month from now.
As the three former World of Outlaw competitors will grace the roster for this year's opener before heading to their full time venues, they will be joined by several up and coming drivers in the sport, others that will return from retirement and a few that will be trading in their old teams and numbers for new offerings. With the current economy in our country, families are encouraged to attend their local race track where they can enjoy hours of affordable family entertainment.
The Civil War Sprint Car series will visit Placerville Speedway on four occasions this year. Following the opener in four weeks the campaign will return on May 3 which will be the annual Tribute to Al Hinds, August 2 and the series finale on September 27. Petaluma Speedway will host the Civil War four dates this season beginning on April 12 followed by events on July 5, July 26 and September 13th. Silver Dollar Speedway hosts three events this year starting on Sunday May 25followed by events on Friday July 18 and Wednesday September 3, which is the Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational.
The famed half mile Calistoga Speedway will host two premier events this year beginning with the Calistoga Cup on June 14th followed by the Napa Valley Challenge on August 9th. American Valley Speedway will host its showcase event June 21st while Ocean Speedway will host the series for its sole event on September 20.
While many teams have yet to announce their plans for the year to come, a number of drivers have comitteed to run the entire Civil War Series. Topping the headlines will be the return of former two time Civil War Champion David Robinson Jr. of Foresthill. After a two year hiatus from the drivers seat Robinson will return to the F&F Racing teams to take care of unfinished business and seek a third possible title. The driver known to many as "Powerfeed" will be joined by his arch rival Andy Forsberg of Auburn who recently won his fourth series championship.
After finishing as a bridesmaid last season Colby Wiesz of Colfax will look for his first series championship. The former Marysville track champion has been hired by veteran car owner John Taylor and will pilot the JTM Motorsports #35 formerly driven by two time champion Greg DeCaires. DeCaires is expected during the campaign with a new ride that will be announced in the coming weeks.
The seasoned veterans are due to be flanked by numerous young up and coming drivers such as Mason Moore of Princeton and Kyle Larson of Elk Grove who shared the Rookie of the Year title in 2007. Well known 16-year-old lady racer Alissa Geving of Penngrove is sure to make things exciting as she plans her first full season in California's premier series and will chase the rookie crown in the wake of her former kart racing rivals Moore and Larson. Look for former Midget Lite racer Tyler Franklin of Roseville to be among the Rookie driver in this tour along with several sophomore and junior drivers including Dan Gooder of Auburn, James Sweeney of Placerville, Josh Keheley of Mariposa and many more . Former series rookie of the year Scott Russell of Placerville will be on the opening night roster as well along with fellow locals C.J. Humphreys, Justin Johnson, Scott Kinney and more.
The Civil War Series will compete for over $15,000 in winnings for each event, excluding contingencies and sponsorship bonuses to later be announced. Drivers will compete for over $20,000 in championship funds sponsored by Hoosier Tires West. Hoosier Racing Tire is the official race tire of the Civil War Series and its participating race tracks.
