The second week of the 9th Annual GRP Racing Trivia Contest came to the halfway mark at the MDTR Speedway on Wednesday. Stan M stepped down for one day to allow guest flagman Mike Orness a chance to spin the sticks and give the field the crossed flags. A couple more entries arrived in the modified division while the three-in-one class (aka supers/streets/stock cars) had one entry. We'll take a look at the "new" division first.
Completing his run in all four contest divisions, John Lackmann put the big 454 powerplant in his Bazooka-mobile. The Bazooka car is actually a cross between a super and street stock. John has had some trouble getting it dialed in during past contests, so he wasn't sure how it would perform on the trickier MDTR surface this year. John jumped in and fired it up! What's this? Another oil dripper? Yep, the big block 454 was still showing some signs of smoke. John "dusted off" our guest flagman and got down to business. The difficult surface and tricky conditions took it toll. John wheezed under Mike's checker flags with a 24 point score. Many thanks to John for participating in all four divisions, something that he has done for several years.
The first mod entry today came from a rookie. Jason Richert from Cadott brought his Viebrock Performance #50 modified over for his first attempt in the division. Jason had a wing on top of the car just like Kevin Viebrock used to have on his mod when he ran in the Winged Outlaw Modified division at CLS many years ago. Jason knew he needed a little bit of an advantage going up against several strong veteran competitors. When came blasted under Mike Orness' checkers, Jason had posted a very good 25 point effort. This naturally gave him the early lead in the Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year standings. Will he be able to hang on and earn top rookie honors? We're only halfway with plenty of activity still to come.
The final run of the day came in the modified division. This contestant was also completing his efforts in a fourth division this year. Mark Schreiner (aka Tireguy) brought his Jamie Lemke Racing/Tow Master Trailers #17L J-car to the track looking for a top run. Tireguy's favorite class is the mods, so he was determined to do well. After all, Mark had already posted two 36 point scores and a 34 point effort in his three previous contest runs this year. Another solid effort would bode well for the Four Score Award too. Mark knows modifieds, so he needed very little assistance in setting up the car. Even with his knowledge, Mark admitted that he would need several guesses in order to complete his tour. With seven guesses on tricky questions and photos, Mark blasted beneath the flagstand to receive the checkered flag from Mike. The scoreboard showed a familiar number for Mark. Yes fans, another 36 point score for this strong runner from Hutchinson. Mark was relieved and satisfied with his effort this year. Now it's time for him to sit back and watch the remainder of the contest unfold. Mark currently leads in both the modified and the combined super/street/stock car divisions. Can he go for a tri-fecta win with three championships this year? Several other top-runners will try and prevent that from happening.
