Public service announcement for sprint car fans.
Protect your hearing! I got hearing aides this week. The audiologist was quizzing me about contributing factors to my hearing loss, beyond being a 64 year-old man. She asked if I worked around loud equipment, shot firearms a lot, went to a lot of rock concerts, or if I went to car races. Bingo! It seems that 52 years of sprint car races without hearing protection is not good for your hearing
Invest in some earplugs or earmuff type protection. The last couple of years I've been wearing ear plugs with earmuffs, just because the noise made my ears ring worse than normal.

20 years in the music business
36 years as an aircraft mechanic
Around racing for over 60 years
I have chronic tinitis event after wearing hearing protection for all of my aviation career, half the time around racing and mixing over 5,000 live concerts. You definitely don't want what I have, protect what you have...

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Spent many years at the racetrack and played in a band for awhile too. Normal hearing in my right ear last time I was tested. I have a little loss in my left hear but not enough for hearing aids according to my ENT doctor. The only time I ever wore ear plugs was at the IndyCar races at TMS. They are extremely loud and the higher revs on the engines forced me to go get plugs after about 5 laps.

I guess I am lucky so far. I am 64 as well, been attending for 64 years, don't remember much from the first few years. I had the flu and my right ear clogged up. Got that taken care of and the ENT gave me a hearing test. I shit you not, he came into the room after test was done and first thing he said, Well, I really don't know if I can tust that test. I asked why. He said it is unbelievable that someone my age can get the score that I did. My ears ring like hell from Tinninitits, but other than that, wow.

I wish EVERY track and EVERY sanctioning body would MANDATE mufflers.
The biggest sprint car race of the year runs mufflers, there's absolutely no good reason not to run them everywhere.
They don't make the cars quiet but they take the edge off of the noise. It would be a wise PR move for any track that's within 5 miles of a town also.
