I was wondering why Brownie wouldn't take the wing off and give it a shot at the Cornbelt Nationals. He's a ambassador of sprint car racing and has big time sponsors why not give it a go? 76% of his wins are at Knoxville and he knows his way around there. It would be great to see a Knoxville guy give it a run! I know if Jac Haudenschild had that opportunity he would go for it! Its a big paying race and I don't know why some guys don't give a shot. I bet if Sammy got a call for that race he would do it. Oh well!

And what's to stop Sammy and Kevin from taking the wing off of the 39 car if Sammy wanted to do it?

Racing with a wing has proven to be much safer on 1/2 mile tracks like Knoxville Steve Sammy Droud Jac ,Stewart are old school and ran before the wing started. The night Daryl Dawley and Roger Larson died changed sprint car racing.Bob Trostle was a big supporter  of safety and wings.I was in the pits with the #47 car and Bob Kinser was going to run the masters race in it and was one of the best in non wing cars and when He came in He told Gil that was the fastest he had ever went .Brian has nothing to prove and everything to lose.I love non wing cars but anything over 3/8 mile is plenty fast.

Non wing cars on a big 1/2 mile are just not necessary anymore.  I love non wing racing, but you gotta put safety first. Don't bet on Sammy or Jac doing it either. They both know things can go wrong really fast.

Once again people refering to wing racing as safe.

Sad how fast people seem to forget how many great winged racers have passed while racing winged sprint cars.

Wings make the car incredably faster where as traditional non-wing is more technical.

With that said they run 360 wings friday and 410 wing's saturday at corn cup. Brown will most likley go try for 2 for 2 in 2 .

I prefer the traditional non-wing myself , but love it all.

A. Wings were mandated at Knoxville in 1982 after Gary Scott passed (Dawley and Larson were 1979).  Today's tubing and self-containment were just two safety factors that were not around.

B. Bob Kinser raced with a wing (in a 410 no less) for many years before he was here for the Masters, which was his last race.  It certainly was his last fastest race.

C. It is really cool to see the non-wing cars at Knoxville where there is always at least two grooves.  Enjoy the show!

Every year the same ignorants pop up yapping about how dangerous non-wing sprints are at Knoxville or any half mile yet they have to go back to 1982 to reference any injuries in a non-wing sprint car at Knoxville. You don't think they've made any safety advancements? Literally no one has been hurt there in all the modern non-wing races they've had dating back to 1989. Yet, Dobmeier probably just ended his career in a wing car not to mention Swindell at Knoxville and all the other serious injuries and deaths in winged sprints at Knoxville. If I were a driver today and looked at the facts instead of folklore of 40 years ago, I would conclude that non-wing is actually safer at Knoxville. Especially since they'll most likely have the track prepared so they run lap times equivalent to 40 years ago but in much safer cars.

Not even arguing what's safer, but how many winged races have been run at Knoxville over the last 38 years versus non-winged? Comparing the safety records of 600-700 winged events versus 10 non-winged events that have happened in the last 38 years and declaring non-winged to be safer is silly.

I still like traditional sprinters on a half mile, takes a lot of macho to do it. I've seen some good racing on halfs and some not so good racing on halfs.  I think the half miles are probably to fast for midgets though. I bet if Jac had a good ride he would give it a go.

I like the variety including the non-wing cars and the Late Model Nationals.  This will be a fun weekend to watch Knoxville despite the fact that not many of the winged racers will give it a try.  My subscriptions to Floracing and Dirtvision provide me with more racing than I have time to watch but does not give me the right to decide who should remove their wing and give it a go this weekend.  Drivers tend to excell at one or another so I look at most of the non-wing racers and winged racers as specialists in their preferred form of racing.  I appreciate both for what they are but night in and night out I still would take non-wing.  Back in the 60's they'd run the same cars without a wing or cage as a Sprint Car then some would bolt on a cage, add a wing and run as Super Sprints or Supermodifieds as both terms were sometimes used to refer to caged and winged cars.  I still think of today's Sprint Cars with the wings in those terms and consider the non-wing as Sprint Cars and winged as some kind of hybrids.  They can both provide great or lousy racing depending on intangibles such as weather and track conditions.

This will be a fun weekend for spectating on the old big screen.

I don't know if I'm one of the same old ignorants or one of the new ones. Didn't a guy get killed just a few years back in a non-wing car at a half mile dirt track in Iowa?

Wingless & midgets seem more entertaining on smaller tracks

Actually, winged cars too...

But i'm gonna watch anyway
