Good quetion. When I was racing, I actually had decent luck with having good sponsors, however, All of them were from relationships that I had established over time. One was a driver that drove our family car back in the day, other sponsors from our family car, etc. I have tried the cold call deal, and I have not ever gotten one sponsorship from doing that. I have gotten more sponsorship however, just by being nice to people in the pits. Talking with families, letting their kids sit in the car, just being a respectful person really. You never know if that person owns a large company that needs to spend some advertising dollars! lol. In all reality, All the sponsors that I had were people that I had a relationship with before I personally had a car. I did manage to gain a couple through my time racing, however, it took the time for me to gain a friendship with them before anything ever came of it. Keep in mind, this was at the local level in the Sioux Falls SD area.

Usually is is thru contact and knowing right people. There was a story of how Kenny Bernstein obtained the Budwiser sponsorship by going to their main headquarters parking lot and displaying his cars and equiptment. There are so many deserving racers that with the right break could do a lot.A car owner that my son drove for a few times said that when He had Sammy Swindell in the seat people actually called him to offer parts and assistance as they knew at that time the car would be toward the front.Guys like Tony Stewart probably can just call the right people at Chevrolet and become part of the racing budget.A lot of the top teams get quite a break or free to run their parts as they know that the lower tier drivers want to run what the winners have and will find a way to pay for it. It looks like Bobby Allen teams raced his way into getting some desrving  sponsorships by doing a lot with not a lot.

Most of the big teams have hired agencies to go out and search for sponorship. If the agency lands a sponsor a percentage goes to them in the form of payment. The average team finds sponsors by just meeting right contacts and networking or have an inside connection.
