From his Facebook page:
"Many of you have asked about Stevie’s plans for 2017. Here they are:
After 31 years in the sport, Stevie has decided to retire. Thirty-one years is a long career and it was a great ride! Now he’d like to focus on and put all his efforts into his business – Smith Titanium. Over the last few years, it’s been hard to juggle both the business and racing. Something had to give, and after 30+ years in the seat Stevie made the tough choice to stop racing. There have been many wonderful people who have been a part of his career and he is thankful for every one of them. The last three years with RBR were some of the best years in his racing career – which made the decision to retire even more difficult. To his credit, Fred Rahmer said that should Stevie change his mind, there will be a car waiting for him. Many thanks go to all the teams Stevie has raced for over the years. And a huge thank you as well to family, friends and of course all his fans for the support. Nothing will be forgotten. Stevie will still be at the race track, just in a different position. It’s not the end, it’s the beginning of something new!"

Good luck to Stevie in future endeavors. I'm glad I got to see him kick ass in Fred's 51 the last couple of years, & even happier that he survived a long sprint car career with body intact!

When Stevie hit the road with the Outlaws with Hamilton back in the early '90's it was easy to predict that he would be the WoO rookie of the year. Hindsight is 20/20 but back then I predicted Stevie would end up putting up Steve Kinser like numbers. That's how much I thought of him. I was there when rain and an open red robbed him of his only Knoxville Nationals win (1993). That was my first time there and they say you never forget your first :-). Steve is, has been, and always will be a class act. I wish him all the best whatever he does moving forward. (Chris Lovett)

Stevie would have well over 100 WoO wins had he not taken a step back from the sport in the 2000s. His Knoxville record is really excellent, and his late career success was very good to see.
I kind of hope Jason Meyers gets back into it like Stevie did and has a late career renaissance in the same manner.

Wow! Talk about getting old. Have to keep telling myself, this is Stevie, not Steve. Happy for him and his family after a great career.

No doubt. Stevie racked up an impressive win total, considering how short his WoO run was in total. And yet too many consider todays talent pool deeper than it's ever been? Stevie could probably still school all of todays drivers with the exception of Schatz, of course.

Selfishly, I hope changes his mind and takes Fred up on his offer but regardless, what a brilliant career. Stevie is one of the best and has been for a very long time. Didn't matter if he raced 100 times a year or 20, when he came to the track, he was a threat to win no matter who else was in the pits or what car he was driving. He did it off the porch as well as here in Central PA. Thanks for the memories Stevie. You were one of the best on the track and most importantly, off the track. Gonna miss seeing you wheel it.

His last race was with the Outlaws at Charlotte on 10/29/16, where he finished 6th in the B.

What hasn't been mentioned is what a class act Stevie was, nice guy isn't a big enough compliment. When he drove for Dan Motter they might have been the best combination of Owner/Driver good guys in the sports history. All that's left is The Hall of Fame!

Stevie was on the WoO tour for more than a decade. From 1990-2002 he ran most of the races. Not to take anything away from his 70 wins, but it's not like he did that in 3-4 years.

I wasn't hanging a ribbon around his neck. In my book 70 wins in 12 years is pretty damn good. Pittman has a smaller total and more years on tour.....Joey has 19 more wins but closing in on what.....17-18 seasons? That's not taking anything away from them, either.

Pittman has a championship to put on his resume, plus spent 4 years of his prime in PA.
Saldana has 29 more wins.
This isn't to minimize Stevie in any way, more to burst your bubble about how much today's field stinks in comparison to the "good old days".

My bad.....Poor math on Joey's numbers. Just how many prime years did Stevie give up? Regardless, I think we agree he was a hell of a driver. As for the rest of todays field.....you tell me where thier numbers are. The majority of the drivers with any real numbers are getting up in age. They overlapped Kinser and Schatz and got their asses handed to them, and several are still able to win today. The "good old days" as you put it, aren't that old when you consider the best of the best lasted through two and three generations of drivers and cars. And yes Pittman has a WoO title. I haven't looked, but if his title wasn't ackomplished with the lowest win total for a season of all time, it was close to it. 8 or 9 total wins, I think.

Stevie is a gentleman. Thanks man even though I always hated your kind words about slick tracks:)
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Yes and Pittman didn't win an overall PA points title, Lincoln, Williams Grove, or Port Royal track championship either while being in PA. Hodnett averages winning 2 of those in the same ride. Hell, I just saw a dirt station video of Krimes driving around Pittman in the 27 and forgot he was driving it. Not comparing those too, only saying it's apples and oranges across the board. Pittman is a top talent with a WoO title. This board goes back and forth, "what have you done for me lately", or "what have you done for me against Swindell/Kinser/Wolfgang/Mark/etc...

....sent before done. I'd just say Stevie Smith can match Daryn Pittman at the same age, that's all.
