Really big news today that the antiviral drug Remdesivir is the first to show efficacy in a clinical study. The drug reduced recovery time for hospitalized patients by 31%. It also showed a decrease in mortality from 11% in the placebo group to 8% in the treatment group but that may not be statistically relevant (these patients were hospitalized and severe case patients). The FDA is going to give it emergency use and it will be the standard of care going forward. This is great news, and now we can start testing it with other drugs to possibly develop a cocktail (like what's used to treat HIV). We can also start testing it early in patients to see if it can significantly prevent patients from progressing to severe, which would be a real game changer.

There is drawbacks though- This drug currently can only be administered through IV. It also apparently is difficult to produce so it'll be tough to ramp up and get the doses required. I imagine the Feds will put pressure on them to license it out.

I was reading the same study.  The 31% reduced hospital time is great and hopefully it has the potential to prevent patients from progressing.  Drop in fatality rate may not look good now, but if it can help keep patients from progressing to severe or critical, it could have an unseen positive effect on the mortality rate.

Is this enough to get us back into crowds?  Maybe in the near future.  As you said, not enough doses to make a big difference yet.  Also need to get it in a form that can be prescribed after a positive test---and that may take a while too.

While that report yesterday was encouraging they used it on hospitalized patients so it's not going to prevent outbreaks that could potentially overwhelm local health care systems.  I don't think knowing that I would have a little bit better chance of getting out of ICU would convince me thst it was alright to mingle in crowds.

There are some promising vaccine trials that have been reported on that are our best chance of getting back to some semblance of normal.  Either that or we get best up by this thing long enough that we reach s percentage that provides here immunity.  At least there is three nights of Late Model racing on Flo starting tonight.  They are no fans invitationals with fendered cars but they go fast, turn left and sling dirt so I will be watching.  Hopefully they will go well and help to set the stage for more live racing that will include Sprints.

The drop in fatality IS good, it just wasnt statistically significant to say for certain it reduces it (they use the phrase strongly indicate). I don't think the results yesterday themselves, while very positive, will change anything policy wise. What I am looking for is the future testing of it in early cases. Antivirals are typically most effective early in infections. Tamiflu is the biggest example of this, if you take it early in a flu infection it works tremendous, if you take it late it hardly does anything. Hopefully this could be like tamiflu and giving it early could prevent most from advancing in infection, that would be a game changer.

It was during a town hall for women, while endorsing Biden, that she said this. Couldnt believe she said it but she did.

I agree Stan.  I would not venture to the track if I were in the high-risk category

Meanwhile NASCAR, the series many on this board like to hate on, will be resuming their revised schedule and will run two races per week when they start up.  I am not a NASCAR hater and I will be watching every one of their events.  A classic example of take what you can get.

You're just repeating yourself

Lets see some evidence

I'm not a fan of either, but they are FAR better than that egotistical, infantile, compulsive liar in the White House

So where are his tax returns anyway?

CAN WE PLEASE STOP WITH POLITICS NOW????

Just Christian freedoms?  Or all of them?

All I know is this:

Friday night we opened up Monarch , with easy to follow social distancing rules in the stands (which literally was a simple as blocking every other row from fans sitting in them, and using those rows to get up to their seat or go down to get food; etc, so no one walked directly in front of the people that were nearby them), the fan count was about as high as it's ever been in the history of the track. Fans were vocal, appreciative and adhered to the event guidelines. Car count in the pits was up close to 50% of normal - and it's a Friday track kind of out of the beaten path of racers.

Last night we opened up 82 with the exact same safety rules with the exact same fan results. Huge crowd, everyone complied and it was a crazy crazy night at the races...corner 1 lights got popped by lightning day before which also fried the computer in the tower that the scorers did all the transponder work and wiped out a lot of the PA system...nearly double the amount of cars in the pits (it wasn't a sprint show but there were 167 cars that shown up) and we made it through all the gremlins, had a superb track all night long, and people got to see double the racing program as normal for $15. There was wall-to-wall racing in all divisions, tons of wild incidents, a few shenanigans thrown in for good measure and gave people an excuse to sleep in this morning.

My point is, humans, especially in this country are very social creatures, and if you keep them in a cage long enough the outcome (like the recent protests and such nationwide) probably is going to be worse than the cause at some point.

And if people simply adapt to some of these modifications as this situation continues - especially at outdoor activities - I think it can be done safely and smartly. But the gen pop has to all work together...and I haven't heard even one peep from any of the fans or teams since that were 'inconvenienced' or their experience was diminished from just changing up a couple of things when they arrived at the track.

Plus the 'text food ordering' system I developed for Monarch was a huge hit - and something that should have been done at tracks years ago with the tech advances that are sitting right in front of them. Fans went out of their way leaving the track commenting how much they liked the new service.

So things aren't all bad. People just have to adapt a bit and tracks have to be a bit more creative and use common sense. I've never been much of a doom and gloom person either. I always thought life what what you make of it given whatever obstacles are in your way. Overcome. Move forward. Repeat.

All that being said, I might as well plug our big Sprint Car Bandits event this coming Saturday at Monarch. :)

I put a limit on entries and registration sold out in 8 hours...we've got 38 360CI SCB teams that paid their advance registration from Kokomo to Alamogordo - and points in between.

Discount tickets are on sale now and going at a good clip. (We have to limit stands attendance but the stands there are huge and can easily handle a $2,100 to win and $300 to start event.) Here's the tickets link:  https://sprintcarbandits.com/050920.html

Current forecast shows 73 degrees, partly cloudy, light breeze and 10% chance precip. So it doesn't get much better than that for sprint car racing conditions.

And here's the Sprint Car Bandits vs 'Invaders' paid entry list (and with this level of drivers, there's going to be a good half dozen drivers hitting lapped traffic in about 4 laps into the feature and it's going to be pandemonium on that ultra-fast 1/4 mile track that I call The Dirt Palace, Monarch Motor Speedway in Wichita Falls, TX:

I know you copied and pasted this, because I saw it on Facebook already.  Some questions are valid.  Some only take a little thought and research to answer.  I know everyone is up for a good conspiracy, but most can be answered with common sense.

1-3, good question.  I don't agree with.

4.  I don't think any state has ruled you have to stay inside.  You are allowed to go outside.

5.  Sunlight alone does not kill the virus.  And if you open playgrounds, there will be kids in each other's faces.  Not saying I agree they should be off limits---just arguing the logic

6.  This is a fuzzy issue when it comes to emergency declarations.  I would not bet on the fact you will not be ticketed, arrested, and/or fined

7.  Agree

8.  The fear isn't the death RATE or hospitalization RATE, it's the fear of the numbers of deaths and hospitalizations.  Flu will only infect around 12-15% of the population annually.  This is going to infect 50-75%.  So, even with identical RATES, the death and hospitalization totals would be 4-5 times higher if left to play out over a short period of time.  The death rate is really not the issue most scientists are as worried about at this point.  It's spreading out how fast it spreads.  The only way to make this the exact same as the flu, would be to spread it out over 4-6 years----and, that's not going to happen.

9.  Because lots of people live there?  I don't understand why this is a question

10. Stupid government logic.  Most of the essential/non-essential does not make sense to me and I agree this is cloudy and stupid

11-13---depends on perspective

14.  Flu typically ends after spike in late-winter to early-spring.  If you cut off the means by which covid is spread, you also cut off the means by which flu is spread.  This should be an easy concept to follow

15.  Most homeless do not attend bars, night-clubs, restaurants, work, sporting events----this is not difficult to understand

16.  Simple answer-----they knew it would go over like a lead balloon.  Every country in the world that had already been fighting this said we would never get out of it quickly without masks.  Here we are.  Late to the party as usual.

17.  Dumb statement.  Masks are worn in many industries every day and no one dies from lack of oxygen

18.  Less than it did to your parents and grandparents back when polio, smallpox, World War 1 and 2, tuberculosis, the Spanish Flu----etc, etc, etc.  This will be a relatively small price to pay compared to those others I've listed that previous generations have been through.  I know we're all precious and fragile now, but we'll make it.

19.  Car accidents---less people on the road.  Flu deaths----less flu spreading from mitigation.  Work accidents---less people working. Etc, etc, etc.   This isn't hard to figure out.

20.  Because world leaders meet on a regular basis.

21.  We do control the government.  We elect them every 2-4 years.

22.  Because COVID has taken the other types of procedures and treatments off the table by orders of the states.  Therefore, to assure hospitals would operate as needed to get through this, extra funds are provided to fight this outbreak and offset that lost revenue.  Because we seem to be so much in favor of private health care, they are businesses now that must show a profit or close down.

23.  Silenced by whom?  Doctors have the right to talk to whatever media source they wish.  Please provide an example.  I've seen doctors with all different perspectives from one end of the spectrum to the other.  I've not seen, nor heard of one doctor imprisoned or muzzled for giving their scientific opinion.

24.  Obama didn't give any of his money away that I am aware of.  I am assuming you mean our country funded a research lab through government dollars and it was during his administration?  Nothing new.  Our government sends your tax dollars to other countries all of the time.  In this case, it's likely due to China being the hot spot for new pandemic outbreaks.  Some day, we will likely see a bird flu H5N1 outbreak from there and it will make the Covid virus look like the sniffles.  God help us all after seeing how society reacted to this one.

25.  Don't know.  Don't care.  I do know at this point I would like to see enough vaccine so anyone who wants it, can get it, and we can be done with this crap.  Then, everyone can pick the next big topic in 5-10 years to claim conspiracies about.  You're not going to hear my opinion nationally though as I am only a blue-collar shmuck.  You will, however, hear the opinion of celebrities and billionaires.

26.  This is a pile of garbage.  If you Google Agenda 21, 2030, you will get a propaganda produced outline of this agenda.  This has been around since the mid-90's and is nothing more than how nations can work together to beat poverty and hunger while improving the environment.  I've heard this nonsense for 25 years and that's all it is---nonsense.  Remember the reflective stickers on the back of road signs and how they were guides for UN troops?  That was back 20 years ago.  The Swine Flu vaccine was going to be a tracer for the UN that Obama was administering to all of us.  That was 11 years ago.  Bunch of fanatics and garbage.

27.  Because pandemics have been happening since the beginning of time and as recently as last year scientists have been warning us we are grossly under-prepared for a pandemic again-----and they nailed it!!!!  Look up list of past pandemics----you will be amazed at how we have curtailed the numbers through technology, vaccines, and science in recent decades.  We were WAY overdue for a bad one---just as they warned us.

28.  Can't confirm this was said, but I've been telling my family for years there's going to be one.  I thought it would be bird flu or MERS though.  I'll make a mind-blowing prediction---sometime in the next 2-20 years, there's going to be another one.  Will you question my involvment with the country where the next one originates?

29.  Not infringing on their freedoms.  They can worship any God they wish and most states will allow them to do wo with others in limited sized groups.  Then, when this is all over, they can once again congregate as they were.  Pretty weak attempt to end Christianity if that is the point

30.  I don't believe most stores are allowing more than 1 or 2 people per household and most have a number limit to customers at one time to keep people spread out.  Church services typically have people shoulder to shoulder, in rows 3 ft. apart.  This does not follow the recommendations laid out by health depts.  Why would we think this is okay?

Agree some of the questions are valid.   Most are not real hard to answer though and put conspiracy to bed real quick.  For example, the can't go outside question?  Not one state has a "you cannot go outside" order.  Not one.  Can't practice your religion?  Not one state has made it illegal to practice your religion.  Not one.  Some of these questions twist the words and just prey on simple-minded people who can't make a solid, objective thought nor will take the time research a subject.

How about the CDC hiring in November?  So, let me get this straight.  We are going to produce a pandemic to reign mass hysteria and terror on the world------but we are going to hire people to try to stop it?  Why wouldn't you wait until after the pandemic got going to address this if your main goal was mass hysteria and terror?

Not on this list of questions, but I have also heard China unleashed this intentionally in Wuhan.  So, let me get this straight.  We are going to unleash a virus on the world, and we'll start in our own country?  Who would do this?  Would you not put a small vile in your pocket, hop on a plane, land in New York, and unleash it there?  Why start in your own backyard?

As far as posts being removed on Facebook or Twitter, someone tried to tell me this was a violation of their freedom of speech.  Once again, this goes back to the Kyle Larson freedom of speech argument.  Facebook and Twitter are businesses.  It is impossible for them to violate your freedom of speech.  When you sign up for a Facebook or Twitter account, there is a "agree to terms........" box you check.  If you read through that, it says they have the right to remove material they deem inappropriate.  This has NOTHING to do with government or freedom of speech.  Using their platform is a privilege and not a right.

OK, she said it. taken out of context, it doesn't sound good, but her point is that we can learn from mistakes & hard times. The Depression brought us Unemployment Insurance, Social Security, & Federal Deposit insurance on our bank accounts, etc.

I don't like HIllary but she's right on this

31. Why don't you shut up about politics & go back to whining about Port Royal?

This is a SPRINT CAR website

I don't have time to go thru every point, especially since plenty of them are based on false premises, but on 29... Christians' freedoms are in NO WAY being infringed upon. The Constitution prevents them from IMPOSING THEIR RELIGION ON OTHERS

Give me one example of how anyone has been persecuted for their religious beliefs.   I realize large gatherings have been banned.  However, most states are allowing small groups to gather and worship at church.  Therefore, the right to your free religion has not been taken.  Just the right----temporarily----to gather in large groups to worship.

Give me one example of freedom of speech that has been violated?  You can give me all of the examples you wish, but not one of them will be an actual example of what freedom of speech actually is----unless you surprise me.

I hate to dissapoint you, but if you do some research you will find that this is not the first time in the history of the United States these types of restrictions have been put in place for a disease outbreak.  Do a little digging.  They all complained about the same things---until it was all over, and things returned to normal.

The following are all going to happen within the next 12-18 months:

1.  We are going to hold a free, democratic election

2.  We are all going to be able to attend our churches in the masses

3.  Sporting events will all open back up to spectators

4.  You will be able to go to the store, restaurant or bar without a mask

When these things do happen---and they will----will you then concede that there is no mass conspiracy to control the world?  Will you then be able to see it is nothing more than the authorities following the advice and expertise of health officials, doctors and scientists?  Or, will you move on to the next conspiracy?
