A couple years ago at Selinsgrove. The guy that owned the Casey's stores #6 (Lonny Parsons?) Walked right out in front of the water truck when they were still running the track in before the show started and got ran over. I didn't see it happen but heard the trucks air horn blowing as it plowed into him. Thankfully it threw him off to the side and he didn't go underneath. We could never understand how someone who is at the track week in week out could do something so bizarre. How could he not see the tanker truck coming right at him?

Juan Pablo Montoya's recent, unusual, wild crash with a jet dryer at Daytona got me thinking about weird things that have happened with open wheel race cars. The one that comes immediately to my mind is Sammy Swindell's bad crash at Lernerville Raceway in Western PA in which Sammy (at fairly high speed) ran into the back of a "push truck". If I'm not mistaken Sammy did severe damage to one or both of his hands.

Do any of you remember any other weird/wild, out of the ordinary open wheel situations??

AT BOONE, IA THEY HAD A RACE THAT THEY TOOK 4 CARS FROM EACH FEATUE, YOU HAD 4 SPRINT CARS, 4 LATE MODEL,4 IMCA MODS, 4 STREET STOCKS IN SAME FEATURE. THEY HANDICAPED EACH CLASS. TO TOP IT OFF SOME OF THE PUSH TRUCK DRIVERS WERE DRINKING ON JOB WITH SIX PACKS OF BEER IN PUSH TRUCKS

Can't remember the year or the driver, but on a race night during the Marion County Fair at Knoxville a driver lost a tire, and it flew out of the track, bounced on the roof of the nearby show barn, then bounced off of the barn that housed the pigs and cattle. Maybe not "weird" but certainly got a quite a chuckle out of it.

Back in the pre-wing days of the 70s, somebody actually got out of the track at Jackson, MN and the car speared into the roof of a barn behind turn 3. Don't remember his name.

After they fixed the roof, they painted a target on the spot.

Some interesting things i have seen in Chico over the years.

- Started raining one night so they had all the push trucks and tow trucks one the track trying to save it when the big Browns Towing, truck slid off the track coming out of 4 and hit the frontstretch wall.

- (This has happened twice that i have seen.) During the fair a car flipped off of turn 4 lost a tire and it flew over the fence and into the livestock barn.

- A few years back when Jason York ran his yellow car he was being pushed off and the push truck drove up over the right rear and tore his car up pretty bad. Jason had a lot of bad luck that year and swears he will never drive another yellow race car.

-Zack West coming off of turn 2 lost control and spun to the infield striking an official. the official flew up in the air and got up, unhurt as far as i know.

-Fall Nationals years ago i believe it was Jason Meyers flipped off of turn one all the way to Skyway. Into the fence (about 100 yards off the track).

-Lucas Wolfe at Gold Cup clipping Danielle Simpson sending Wolfe into a violent series of flips resulting in what was left of Wolfes car in or near a tree off of turn 1. I saw the tree afterwards and it was pretty beat up.

-Tim Kaeding taking his dad out on the last lap for the win on Fathers Day!!! Brent turned around and then attempted to hit TK head on after the race.

-Tim Kaeding getting put into the frontstretch wall on the final lap by Andy Forsberg. Kaeding proceeds to turn around on the frontstretch and slam into Forsberg in turn 4 as he came around on the cooldown lap.

-Tim Kaeding during a heat race at Mini Gold Cup? i believe. Flipping into the infield all the while keeping his foot on the gas. ripped half the wing off the car and still nearly transferred to the main.

-Another TK story from Silver Dollar. Lol. TK grabbing the final transfer from Hannagan at Gold Cup during the B Main off the final turn. There is a picture of this pass somewhere and it shows just how great it was.

-Dennis Moore Jr. Flipping the Williams Motorsports car off turn 3 in qualifying kept the car running came back on track and finished his laps.

-A water line break under the backstretch took about an hour to fix and finished the races if i remember correctly. (i was very young when this happened.)

-A saturday night race was rained out so they ran on sunday afternoon. the infield looked like a lake.

Thats all i can think of for now if anyone wants to elaborate on these or correct anything that is innaccurrate.

I was at Junction Motor Speedway during the first season it was open, I think. The backstretch was where the exit to the pits was and the wall was sticking out a little bit. There was a sprinter who came off of turn 2 and you could just tell he was going to hit it. Instead of braking, he gassed it and ran head on into it. It slip the car in half all the way to the cockpit area. You could literally hear the driver screaming for inside the car on the front stretch. Think it broke both legs, a few ribs, and punctured a lung if I remember correctly.

Forsberg was leading that race. TIM tried to run Andy over and got into the wall. there is visor check with Mike Doyle.

Yeah it was a close call i dont blame either driver on that one. I would have done the same thing they did if i were put in both their shoes.

Cottage Grove Speedway in the early 90`s WoO show about half way thru the A Main the power went out. Pitch black for several minutes. Everyone collectively held their breath as the lights slowly came back on waiting to see the carnage. To everyones amazement nobody got into each other! Fred Brownfield had generator lights on each end of the track at every WoO event for years after that. The next year`s WoO race had Jeff Swindell jumping the turn 4 wall and got caught up in the fence. As he perouetted he wrapped himself up in the fence and had to be cut out. The race was held up almost 2 hrs as they repaired the fence. In the mean time, Swindell had his car fixed and returned to cheers from the fans!

knoxville nationals prelim night, Billy Wilburn (front tire changer for Rusty for several years) smacked the wall in turn one, the engine kept running and the car spun like a top as it appeared he was knocked out...very spooky vibe goes over the crowd when driver is unresponsive and the engine is running with wheels turning.

I would guess it was Jack Comer from Rapid City, SD.

I think it was Kevin Swindells first WoO race at Eldora awhile ago, they were getting ready for the 4 wide solute and he flipped over the fence.

Eastside Speedway, Waynesboro, Va., in the 1960s Smokey Stover dominated the modifieds (yes, open wheel coupes) and they had a full inversion (but he won something like 21 out of 22 anyway).3 guys conspired to box him in, on front & both sides. Smokey pulled into the infield, as did his opponents, & they slugged it out right then & there.

I forget if they even finished the race.....

This is a photo of the incident from the Jackson County Pilot dated July 16, 1980. The driver was Jack Egge.

I seen a driver win a race upside down I believe it was at Cameron Mo probably about 10 years ago. He got together with a lap car coming out of 4 and flipped down the front stretch. Wing touched the ground as he crossed the line. Jamie Moyle is the name coming to mind?

I've spent a lot of time at Knoxville over the years and remember someone flipping down the back stretch and ending up stuck under a goose neck also.

I was setting on the tables under the stands one night and had a car hit the fience right infront of us. It ripping the fuel cell off and covering us with fuel.

I have pictures from about four years ago at the front row challenege when the grader was being pulled around the track by a tractor because everything was so wet.

The night that Colin Northway flipped in turn 4 and ended up getting hit walking down the track by another car being pushed into the work area. Ran over his foot and leg with the right rear ending his season.

The night a car went over the wall by the score board and landed on an open trailer.

Last year a bad wreck in turn one. Part of the front end came off and hit one of the extreme team guys. Ended up with a trip to the ER and broken bones.

Those are just the ones coming to mind. Don't normally post on here anymore but this one I felt the need to comment on. :)

Andy Hillenberg flipping hard during A-Main Nationals hot laps 2 years in a row. The second year taking down a sign in turn 1 which probably kept him in bounds.

If you ever had the chance to spend some time with "The Rocket" Jesse Hockett, you were bound to end up with some strange story at some point....this story comes Pit Side, not so much "on track" but whatever.

USAC show at Eldora in '08. Heat race=wreck in 1&2 with Bacon and Sweet (Sweet's car lands on right downtube of Jesse and bends into/over motor); fix other broken parts and go out for B main....Engine blows up in B main. Engine change....becomes a serious problem when we cannot remove the blown engine because of the bent downtube. In my mind, most people are close to throwing in the towel....not Hockett. Tried a porta power, that didnt work, so whats Hockett do? Calls over 2 wreckers and straps them up onto each down tube and has them gas it in opposite directions. After 4 or 5 pulls and with people trying to weigh the car down it eventually works. The rest is a seperate story in itself. But man, I've never been a part of or seen anything like it. #thebestoftimes

Also at Eldora, Mark Kinser won a Heat Race and was the only car left running to take the checkers. Started with 6, they were all locked in and the other 5 pulled in....

The strangest was "KiteMan" I think his name was Chuck Correal from San Diego. He tried to jump over the bridge at Williams Grove one Sunday and with the help of his kite he was to zoom over the bridge and two of the large van trailers sitting end to end on the backstraight he had about 20 feet between the trailers,he cleared the bridge and the first trailer, and a huge gust of wind caught that kite and he came to a stop with the front wheel of his motorcycle busted thru the aluminum door and a huge dent above the hole the bike made where poor Chucks head hit the door,I think he was in bad shape for 6 months or so and finally got it together to go back to Calif. ............Then we had Ken Carter the rocket guy who had a rocket car to jump Lake Champlain in N.Y. he shows up at the Grove with two ramp trucks and a 64 Chevy with a seat and mattress to jump over a few cars then land on the other ramp truck parked so he could be going downhill, well he rips around a few laps then here he comes folks he clears all the cars then the car nosedives thru the back end of the ramp truck when the car just gave it up he staggered around a little once they got him out and said he would like to find the guy who let the air out of the front tires of the Chevy, well it sure knocked the air out of Ken Carter,it was hilarious.......then Grove promoter the late Jack Gunn, forever the promoter, was talking about the next week they would have an airplane demo. derby on the backstraight, tickets are on sale now at the box office out front well I waited a few minutes and went up top ,sure enought about ten were in line, and then Jack comes on the PA and says just kidding folks,April Fool, well he had ten hooked at the ticket office. Oh yeah Chuck did have a helmet on.

I missed the nosedive week but was on the backstretch the night the airplane demo derby was announced...good stuff!
