vande77, I will take exception to a few items you have here...................first, Eckert does bring it upon himself as to the trouble he gets into and he deserves whatever he gets, no disagreement there. But, on the other hand, I have received a seatbelt ticket even tho I had the damn thing on. Also, I received a stop sign ticket because the law officer felt I hadn't stayed at the stop sign long enough. And, a few weeks ago, a friend of mine was pulled over after a night of working on another friend's racecar because the deputy saw him throw a cigarette butt out of the window of the vehicle he was driving. Only thing is, my friend doesn't smoke. A year ago, I was coming home from a World of Outlaws Late Model race over 200 miles from home and it was after 2 AM when I was about 10 miles from home yet. I saw a oncoming car pull over to the shoulder of the road and wait until I passed then did a u-turn and began following me for three miles before he hit his lights and pulled me over. His reason? I had a rear license plate light out. How could he tell if I was meeting him? To say only those doing something illegal will get ticketed is not true. There are many officers out there that will write you up for anything they can and you can choose whether or not to fight it. No, I do not want total freedom from laws, I just want to see the laws enforced as they are written and supposed to be enforced.

Even last night, I was working on photos at the office (about a 17 mile one-way drive from home) that I shot at the Nationals until 1:15 AM and came home. I got into town and there was a deputy about a block away and I hit my turn signal for the corner and went 1/2 block and turned into the alley so I could put my car in the garage. The deputy comes racing into the alley, stops by my driveway, watches me go into the house, leaves and drives by in the alley five, yes, five more times after that. He had no business to pull that kind of bullshit. I was doing speed limit on the streets, used my turn signal (which does happen to be a law, too although very seldom will you see it enforced) and I do not drink alcohol at all (doc says no touch).

I don't know about Knoxville, but around here it seems that the local sheriff's department wants to rule as a police state.

Then you need to go to police headquarters and ask what the problem was or their concern to be going in alley 5 times because there must have been a concern and if they were concerned that much I would want to know. Talking to them goes a long ways. Just give it a try.

$330 for a ticket for one less than half full open can of beer sitting in the cup holder of a golf cart.  No one was acting stupid and no one was drunk.  The guy ticketed was a passenger.  A speeding ticket for 20 over the limit doesn't cost as much.  Money grab is all this is.  Kind of ridiculous.

You will learn. We knew that was a law long time ago. Figure it out people. Follow the law. Yell at your governor and people that make the laws.

Yeah, you DO elect them.  If you vote, that is. . . .

Some of you people probably think Edward Snowden is a criminal because he honorably disclosed how our government was spying on every citizen. Idiots who are willing to give up their freedom for a false illusion of safety. Johnny law in Knoxville is just filling their bank account during Nationals thats it.

Cheers!

then if u don't vote then don't bitch. Have no sorry feelings for people that don't vote, that don't work and bitch about welfare and those that break laws in Knoxville and then bitch that cops are picking on them. Get the klenex box. Was a great Nationsls, great friendly people, good businesses, very nice brewery downtown and just a good time all around. If you can't enjoy this event without breaking laws then sorry but you got alot of growing up to do, because that town and people open their doors to the people. Good job Knoxville and Osky on another fun filled Nationals

The bottom line is that people that want to complain will find a reason to complain.....

Are some of the cops heavy-handed, of course there are some of those.

for every one of those there were 10 that just asked people to dump out their alcohol and let htem go about their business (for the person complaining about the open container ticket, my guess is the cop first asked for you to pour it out on the ground and someone on the cart got all defensive or combative about it, thus the ticket (and in reality, he could have ticketed the driver of the cart as well by Iowa law (seems like someone got a break).

After scouring the Sherriff's report for the 4 days of Nationals, here are ALL of those booked into jail over the 4 days of Nationals (28 total and out of those I count (7) OWI, (13) Public Intox, (1) was a hold for another agency (basically someone else's jail in another county was full, and (3) are arrest warrants (ie: locals). I removed names, but there out on the internet for all to see if they want to search.

Since I live here, I can tell you that the average # of those booked into jail on a NORMAL weekend in Knoxville ranges from 3-7 per Night (so even though there were 25,000 EXTRA people in town, the # of arrests was basically the same as any other weekend).  Seems like if anything, the cops were MORE LENIENT than they normally would be.

not with the track or racingevents, but with the police state like tactics of local law enforcement??  I was stone cold sober and was driving thru the Hy-Vee parking lot just before 2:00 a.m. and met a unmarked Iowa Highway patrolman. He drove out on to highway 14 and returned to the private parking lot to find me (as I had parked in the very front by the entrance) and exited my vehicle and interrogate me for  having a license plate light out. He was rude arrogant and most unprofessional in his manner and questions.  I kept my mouth shut wanting to tell him "that on private property I didn't need a license plate light." After he quickly discovered I was not there to buy beer just before closing of the beer sales tossed me my "papers" back and told me to "get the light fixed as I am not giving you a fix-it ticket but a verbal warning."  Not to be out done  .... the entire time I was detained, a MARKED Knoxville police car circled us (right in front of the well lit Hy-Vee) not in the lot. Upon picking up my wife and son and returning to highway 14 within maybe 2 minutes of being initially released I was pulled over immediately upon entering highway 14 by the marked Knoxville police car that had watched me NO more that 3 or 4 minutes earlier being stopped for the EXACT same reason ...no license light !! I will say to the policeman's credit at least this time I was on a public roadway, but there is no way he could not have known what had just occurred in the Hy-Vee (as I saw him circling us for several laps slowly) lot. We went thru the same routine not 5 minutes later other than questioning my wife and son for their i.d.'s and why we were out at 2:00 a.m.  I guess they have nothing better to do than stop the same car over and over for the same minor issue hoping to find some infraction other than a license plate light that both times got nothing more than a verbal warning.

"Welcome to Knoxville .... please enjoy your visit to Gestapo-Land"

aotually knoxville is not the only one with a problem!  the problem is the whole US. and people not giving a crap about anyone else but themselves and driving home drunk!!  thats why you get pulled over at 2am getting hurassed by cops! but i dont think you should point any fingers at the cop for stoping you!

but in your sistuation it does sound as if it could have been handled in a much better fasion!   but you can still thank all the dipshits in the world for drinking and driving and taking peoples lives! they are the ones that coused you to have issues with the local police!

and the eastist way to find a OWI is lights!!     so if you dont want to be stoped, make sure your lights are working!  its NOT THAT HARD TO FOLLOW RULES!!

Actually i have never ever had a problem with the law in my 20 yrs of going to the nationals. But i did meet the biggest dickhead  ive ever met at Bos Landen while i was there this year. Seems" Thurston" was a MEMBER  and chose to show his disregard for out of towners at "his " golf course. He can lick my balls!  Not sure we will ever go back!

I find this hard to understand.  In all my years of racing I have never been stopped entering, exiting or even near a race track.

Now, there were  probably a few times I should have been stopped leaving as I have been known, on occasion, to have a somewhat heavy right foot!  Wink

Yes, it's the damn liberals. Thank the baby jesus for Iowa which in political primary terms, is not first because it matters. It only matters because it's first. Have you watched the size of the crowd decline year by year. Police harrassment is a huge part of that. For those of you who watch the race and go home, good for you! Many of us come to socialize as long as we can stay awake. Police have ruined that.

Outside of those trying to get behind the wheel after their "socializing", I never heard anyone complain about the cops at the after-party, in the stands, etc..

Out WORLD has changed over the last 10 years, unfortunately, a by-product of that is more security / police presence at events such as the Nationals, King's Royal, WG National Open, Rock Concerts, festivals, fairs, etc..

Until this year, I could walk into Knoxville Raceway with ANYTHING I wanted in my pocket, or in a bag, or in my jacket.  Now, just like at a concert, they search those things and won't allow me to carry in a weapon, drugs, glass bottles, etc..

As a parent, I'm not sure that is a "bad thing" to tell people they can't carry in a weapon (especially when those same people ar the ones that are also wanting to carry in a case of beer per person).

I'll say it again in case you missed it the first 2 times.  COMPLAINERS WILL FIND SOMETHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT, the race was VERY GOOD, so instead of running down the race, they choose to focus their attention on something else (in this case, the local police that made the same # of arrests during the 4 days of Nationals that they do every other weekend of the year (7 people were booked into the jail on TUESDAY this week, and there are ZERO races going on).

I don't know how many tickets were written (it's not public record) over Nationals Week, but I doubt it was a ton more than they normally write during any other week, as they have the same # of staff, but have to respond to more calls for service, fender benders, etc..

I sat at a friends camper right off highway 14 with several other fans till 3 or 4 am most every night. All but me were drinking. Got a little loud telling jokes and laughing. Cops would drive by and smile & wave. Drove back to my camper in the wee hours of the morning. Never got pulled over even though I did  see police many nights. Don't know what you other guys are doing to attract the attention of the cops but in 27 years I have never had any problem with them.
