kossuth...I do take all of that into consideration. I actually rank EACH race, similiar to how I rank the drivers, but with a different calculation. I consider purse, car count, quality of field. Like the drivers calculation, I continue to redefine it as I look at the results I get.
The main problem I ran into, is just getting it started. For me to rank the drivers, I needed to have a good ranking for the races, but to rank the races, I need a good ranking for the drivers...lol It's like a vicious circle.
But as time goes on, and I keep redoing the rankings for both, I feel I am getting there. I would like to eventually release the rankings for the races, maybe a "Top 100" races of the year, but I'm still not completely comfortable with the race ranking calculations.

I absolutely get it. It's very tough to put a number in essence on a driver and say "they are better then these drivers". Very subjective thing to do.
Ranking races and tracks isn't super straight forward either as I'm sure you know. One way I suggest possibly using to rate the toughness of a track thus the strength of the competition is how does the track and it's local racer fair against travelling series? IE the Outlaws, NSL, or the All-Stars. That certainly counts for something as far as "driver" stats go, but there should also be a penalty if it were for not leaving the porch.
Many many many factors to consider here as I'm sure you already know. Like you said a vicious cycle.

Even Bill's model confirms that Donny is head and shoulders above the rest of the competition with a nearly perfect score of 0.98. Shane in second with a 0.71 and everyone else at 0.56 or lower. Just as it appears on the track.

I have been working on a new stat, a computer ranking for sprint car drivers. In other sports, they compile "computer rankings" based solely on numbers/results. In sports like college football, golf, tennis, etc., to try to show a true reflection of how each rank with each other.
I have been compiling all 410 sprint car results since Jan 1 2015. I have had to guess on the purses of a few races and tracks, as I have not been able to find accurate purses for them. But the numbers I have, along with some of the guesses of the purse, I still think I am pretty close. I also have not been able to find results for about 10-20 races.
Eventually, I would like the rankings to be based on the last 2 years worth of results.

How often I update, and where, is still a work in progress. Not sure if I will update it weekely, bi-weekly, or monthly. When I do, I'll post the link on this board.

Awesome Stats: Great job coming up with your formula & giving us an idea of where 410 sprints are today. I've quizzed several knowledgeable people involved in various aspects of the sport on "How many 410 winged sprint cars do you think there are in the US ?" So it seems you've found 830 different active 410 drivers in the US ? That's neat to know. At one time someone published a "drivers list" showing car number, driver, hometown, was that you ?
Also maybe you could partner with an interested stat guy or two that each wanted to complile the info & apply your formula & do one for 360's, non-wing, & Racesaver 305's. It would be real interesting just to see total car numbers & total number of events in US for the year.
