The 45 car ahead of TS was 1 juke away from Ward running down in front of him. The kid was definately in a "mind over matter" state of rage. Had the kid got down in front of that 45 car I would not wonder if he would have stood right in front of TS car. He looked far beyond a controlled pissed off state. This again is why they should have rules that have teeth for getting out of cars in non- red incidents or for your own safety (fire).  The kid made the first and most decicive chess move by getting out mad, then the second and even third move by his agressive anticts of almost getting in front of the 45 car, then coming down more so toward the TS car after the 45 car passed. It is sad another racer (TS) has to live with this outcome.

I don't think Stewart saw him until the very last second, and by then was too late.

One thing I will say is that there are a lot of people on radio shows, TV, and other things that I've read that are talking about Stewart's temper and how he tends to be a bit of a hot head.  And that's all true.  But he had no reason to be a hot head Saturday night.  He probably didn't even know that Ward was the one that crashed until he got into turn 1 (I can't even tell if they made contact or not) and I'm positive he wasn't expecting Ward to be charging at his car.

yes the raw video that i saw on you tube does have a motor sound like you would hear if someone is clearing the motor.

it happens just as tony is beside ward.

to me it looks as if it might be possibe that tony was trying to take evasive action at the last instant and could have been trying to swing the rear of the car to his left away from ward. as the car is stiking ward the rear of tony's car is swinging to driver's left...away from ward.

in the vid i saw it never looked like tony tried to swing the car in wards direction.

some of the "witness" accounts i have seen are so far from what i saw in the vid i was wondering if they saw the same incident.

i can understand non race people on other sites and forums jumping to conclusions and not knowing anything about sprint cars and what it is like...but i am surprised at the people who are in here who are supposed to be fans who are jumping to conclusions.

if tony did in fact hit the gas i will say from what i saw in the vid that he was trying to shake the rear of the car loose away from ward at the last instant.

sprint cars with stagger don't just turn right on a dime. it is kind of like a jet ski or jet boat. you have to hit the thottle to make it turn. and then if you don't break the tires loose it still might not turn.

when i first heard what happened and from the desciptions i heard i thought maybe ward was futher from tony and maybe tony did blow the tires loose at him. but as soon as i saw the vid i was able to understand how this whole thing seemed to be just a tragic accident.

I completely agree.

I don't think they touched. If Tony's right rear would have hit Ward's left front the front end should have headed toward the wall first. In the video the right rear jumps the cushion and then pulls the front end over toward the wall.

The Stewart-Ward incident reminds me of one that occurred at the old Ascot Park in Gardena, CA in 1983.  A young driver was involved in a crash on the backstretch and, in that case, exited his car while cars were still at speed only to be hit and killed.

Face it, unless there is a fire situation, the safest place for a drive in a wreck is inside the car until the safety crew arrives.

In this case we'll never know who intended what.  It was refreshing to see the local sheriff terming the incident an "on track" accident.  If our Clarence Dupnik (Pima County, Arizona Sheriff) had been on the scene, he would have pronounced that George Bush was guilty.

I dont want to go into my opinions of what happened. My idea is that black fire suits/helmets should not be allowed for dirt track racing. Most of the facilities do not have proper lighting and especially with sprint cars having the low right side board it makes it very hard to see I would imagine.

Well-stated.

How about coming up with and enforcing very severe penalties for leaving your car in a non-life threatening situation?

Color doesn't become an argument if the driver wearing the suit stays in his car.

I'm more then aware of the workings of a sprint car and you guys all seem to think the motor you hear throttling up was the one in the video frame but who's to say it was one of the other 20 other cars not on camera but much close to the camera.

First of all our thoughts and prayers are with all involved.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've been wondering how people could distinguish Tony's motor from all the others. Its not the best quality video.
