I guess I`m old school, but I like single car TT I like to record lap times during TT and top 5 in heats...B main winners, things like that during the night and I can even look back at some of those things on the long ride home.  I can even get my notebook out on some of these long cold snowy (climate change) days and think back to that night at the races. I have an illness and it`s called sprint car racing....

I'm alright with group qualifying, as long as major events Such as the nationals, the open, the royal, ect ect stay single car TT. I actually enjoy watching TT myself, but i know alot of others don't,  but i love it!

I agree,, I Like watching TT,s also. But with the timing systems they have today maybe or maybe not it would make the show better, more equall track conditions, and a more efficient show? If it don't work out stay the same. We will never know untill its proven. Nice to see KVille is giving it a shot.

Group qualifying when done correctly can save time, but it's the same # of laps being put on the track, so it in no way helps track conditions (unless you mean it widens it out quicker as there are more cars out there earlier in the night when the sun is still up.

Most group qualifying however doesn't save time as they push the cars off, wait for them to spread out a little bit, then finally throw the green, give them a warm up lap, 2 laps on the clock, and then a cool down lap.  After all those cars finally pull off the track, they send out the next group.

I've seen group qualifying take less time (Knoxville did a great job with it last year), and I've seen it done horribly (Knoxville a few years ago) and take as long or longer than single car qualifying.

In Sydney they push the 3 cars off at the same time in turn 4.. the first car out is on the clock 1st time around ..

You are right about the same amount of laps .. but it is better for the track and the fairness of track condition particularly at Sydney where there is often 40 50 60 cars every night .. principally because of the amount of time the track is sitting in the afternoon sun ..

I for one love qualifying. Watching drivers hit their marks, guys making mistakes lap one and changing their line the second. To me it's like another race.

This thread and all the replies have caused me to lose faith in humanity.

Group qualifying is the scourge of the earth.

I don't have to explain why, it explains itself.

The key to a quick qualifying time period is how quickly the next car is pushed onto the track. If cars get consistantly pushed onto the track during the previous cars 2nd TT lap, it speeds up the process considerably. Volusia did a great job. Qualifying only took about 15-20 minutes. Knoxville does a great job, and so does Attica & Fremont.

Timing in is part of racing sprint cars.  Us drivers are paying LOTS of money to do this. Until they wave us thru the back gate without expecting to be paid I expect to run an entire format.

I seldom find too much to congratulate the WoO traveling circus about but I thought they did a very good job both nights at Vegas.  Qualifying went off without a hitch and they should be commended!  Local tracks might want to see how they are handling qualifying....it just might speed up things at your track! (and I still want single-car qualifying!!!!!)

Lincoln speedway has had group qualifying for several years now...I don't know that it takes any less time, but the fans seem to like seeing more cars on the track at the same time.

Lincoln 1845 ft/.35 mile T1=118MPH
Eldora 2287 ft/.43mile T3=135MPH
Port 2716 ft/.51 mile T3=TBD
Grove 2792 ft/.53 mile T3=135MPH
Selinsgrove 2847 ft/.54 mile T1=136MPH

The thing that has ruined single car qualifying..is pitiful announcing.

It seems most announcers have to scream in fake excitement the "chassis:shock maker:tire:motor maker:sponsor1:sponsor2:sponsor3: car name and sometimes goofy nick name and possible location" in 3 seconds where you cant understand any part of it.  Then the rest of the lap is some early 1980's heavy metal blaring.

Whoa is the day when an educated announcer would say something interesting about the driver, what he has done, what he does or anything interesting about the car and/or sponsors...when the car isn't coming down the straight away.

I can remember things about drivers in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, because you could understand what the announcers actually said about them., especially local racers.

You also used to be able to talk to the person sitting next to you in between races without talking over a blaring scratchy PA playing the best of heavy metal greatest hits.

This comment does not apply to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indy car or most USAC Champ dirt events.
