I wish I could have seen steve win a outlaw race like swindell in less equipment.
Is it a testimony to Sammy that he won the don martin race in the beaver drill and tool shitbox with a cab motor in it??????
Does it mean anything that uncle Karl left him and made Mark kick his ass for awhile???
Is it a big deal swindell won the royal at his age?
does it mean anything a girl named crocker beat kinser in a woo race for a win?
Does it mean anything that schatz has hoosier figured out and nobody else does so we swing on his balls for it when those cars are to arrow dependent now and anybody on the front row can win a damn show cause its follow the leader now anyway?
Does it mean anything that Steve runs the bottom at eldora like bobby allen used to and has since 2011, and Sammy is banging on the wall still winning kings royals?
Does it mean anything that Sammy should have 10 kings royal wins but bad luck fucked him?
does it mean anything that nobody and i mean nobody can beat schatz at knoxville but a few years back a old Sammy drove his ass off and beat schatz all over the track which nobody can do but he did, just to have more bad luck?
does it mean anything that Kinser cant hit his ass in a midget and Swindell has?
Kinser is great and Numbers dont lie no doubt about it
I have talked to Sammy alot over the years and if you know him like i do he would tell you that he thinks Steve is the best between the two but as you talk more Sammy starts in with some excuses here in there in the conversation but if Sammy thinks it then we must think it to but i do find myself having a hard time with it at times.
I like them both and I can say like all of us on here we were lucky to have watched to warriors of sprint car racing go at it like we have.
please no bashing me or hating i was just trying to have some fun with this topic

I had the pleasure of watching both (along with Wolfgang) in their hey-day. Sammy was(is) one of the best open wheel drivers however Kinser would have to be the best sprint car driver ever. In my opinion, Sammy would have more wins and possibly a few more championships, but his interest in Indy Lights, Indy Cars, stock cars, race trucks, an his own interest in R and D kept him from hitting all the races every year. Steve on the other hand strapped in year after year and showed 'em all how to do it.
One thing I do remember from probably the late 80's was Open Wheel magazine had a picture of Sammys chrome vise in the back of the TMC trailer. At around the same time, Karl was cutting the backs off of the guages in the dash and replacing them with paper cups, and road signs sometimes ended up as sheet metal on his cars. . Apples to Apples, Apples to Oranges? Those of us who got to watch both in their prime should be happy we saw history being made...

I agree, we are very lucky to have seen them all throught the years. I was never a huge fan of any, Bobby Allen and Jeff Swindell were my guys, but no doubt they were the cream of the crop. Doug and Sammy could beat Kinser on any given night but the King usually walked away with the money. Check out some old footage of Steve running non-wing at Eldora and winning from the tail with all the USAC boys there, not in Karls car either. For 25 years he was 'The Man'! While Doug was trying to come back from his injuries and now that Steve and Sammy are in the last years of thier careers I've cheered for them all. Different guys with different career choices through the years but they were all 3 at the big shows year after year and Steve Kinser set the bar high. Right now he goes down in my book as the best Sprint Car driver ever...Donny Schatz is starting to make a case though...IMO

IN 5 MORE YEARS EVERYONE CAN JUST DROP THIS SUBJECT ANYWAYS, THEN EVERYONE WILL BE LIKE, "WHO'S GOING TO BEAT DONNY...HE'S THE BEST EVER!" Sorry to even say that because I'm not a Schatz fan in the least, but I see what's happening currently!

Interesting discussion. Lots of "what ifs" you can throw at this. What if Sammy didn't have bad luck at so many big races? What if Kinser hadn't went to napcar and was still with Karl? What if Wolfie hadn't got hurt? What if Opperman hadn't got hurt? I could make a case for all of them as the best, but as good as Schatz has been lately he (in my opinion) will never be in the same category as the four guys mentioned above. Donny would have never made it in the 70 and 80's when sprints, cuz you actually had to man up and drive them versus the lock down follow the leader crap we have now. Even most of his nationals wins have came after they watered down the format. You don't need as much talent today as you did back in the day, just more money. Donny is good, don't get me wrong, but he is not one of the best ever. Probably in the top 10.

Bullshit. You can have all the money in the world and still not have enough talent to do anything with it. Shatz is a great sprint car driver. I would aptly put him in the top 5 all time. I'm not even a fan of his but I dont dislike him either. He has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he knows how to win when the pressure is high, the competition at the highest level and the money is on the line.
On the subject of who has proven to be the better sprint car driver between Kinser and Swindell thats an easy one, Kinser.
Cheers!

Haha, people can never appreciate something until it's stopped or on a downswing. Schatz's dominance at Knoxville is incredible, and while people are starting to realize it, it won't be truly appreciated until 10-15 yrs from now.
Back to Steve vs Sammy, how much bad luck can you have in big races that it makes up for 12 to 1 at Knoxville?

IMO, from a pure driver standpoint, Steve was the best
From a mechanical standpoint, Sammy is WAYYYYYYY ahead of everyone--Steve's not even on the radar screen on this one. Wolfgang is probably 2nd to Sammy (Wolf built his own chasis then, just like he does now for teams like Mark Burch (except back then he built them in the Gambler shop, Schnee Chassis Shop or the Trostle shop and put their names on his car).
I think if you put them all together in their prime, it would be the Big 4 instead of the Big 3 (Schatz is that good, problem is that he doesn't have anyone else in their prime to compete with night after night (sorry to anyone that feels offended by that), because Sammy and Steve are past their prime (and still outdrive most of the guys in thier prime). Steve would still be the best overall driver, Sammy would have still won championships (as would Schatz), and Doug would have still won the big races and made his own schedule (In the handful of years he did follow the WoO religiously, he never looked happy like he did those years they made their own schedule (84-86 with Wiekert, 89 with Danny Peace).

A very excellent post and, for the most part, very interesting reading the comments. Topic brought a smile to my face hoping it was genuine and it is.
Questions is, would Steve have won so many if Karl wasn't turning the wrenches and just how many would Sammy have won if he competed full time every year.
What is happening today is irrevelant.
