Why would "do gooders &tree huggers" care about that?

I always thought the guy with the harmonica did an excellent job at Knoxville. Obviously there are those who are better than others but who are we to complain about the "quality" of the anthem!?
It takes a little bravery to get up and sing, play, it in front of hundreds, or thousands of Americans.
Be happy that we are able to stand up and pledge allegiance to our flag and country!

One of the best live National Anthems I ever heard was an instrumental. Grover Washington, Jr. played it on sax at 76ers vs. Nets playoff game in 1984. Brought tears to my eyes.
But personally, I think NA should be "America the Beautiful" rather than "Star Spangled Banner".. Thankful for our blessings, less warlike. Ray Charles NAILED it!

Like I said, I guess it is one's personal preference. The definition of anthem, quoted from Websters, is, "A song of praise or devotion, as to a nation, etc." I think it should be kept that way. Not some kid up there with a harmonica blowing long, drawn out, flippant, notes to the point it doesn't even sound like the National Anthem as we have known it in the past. I think this guy is terrible and, like I said, not just me, but everyone in our area, instead of enjoying the anthem, just shake their heads and hope he never comes back but he must know someone as they keep bringing him.
My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

The National Anthem can be a great performance regardless of what instrument it may be played on, a harmonica or otherwise. Recently Metalica performed it prior to a NASCAR race and it was great. And lets not forget, for those attending the Chili Bowl in Indian Country, prior to the final nights races, the Anthem performed on the Trumpet. I'll take that version any time over most that TRY to sing it.

I love Marvin, the man was a genius, but that is the worst version I've ever heard. The Star Spangled Banner is a march. It's not a ballad, it's not a guitar solo, it's not a rap, it ain't a waltz, and it sure as hell isn't some "lower the lights and let's get down" old school like Marvin Gaye.

That is about the last live performance he ever gave (Motown 25th Anniversary Show the last) as he was gone a year later. The unique way he sang it is what I enjoyed the most as did everyone else in the building that night. I revere the song, one of the greatest of all-time but a different twist, sung with passion is a nice change and few singers sang with more of that than Mr. Gaye....

I challenge ANYone to find a better rendition of our Star Spangled Banner than these girls. Just search any of their National Anthem videos and I doubt you'll find a single one that isn't flawless. Hearing it turns yours truly to mush every time.

The Detroit Red Wings used to have a little girl (or girls, maybe Sisters, fuzzy memory) sing the Anthem on occasion and it was amazing. Maybe some ol' Dead Wing fans can help me out here.....

Well if u want a very good anthem singer,go to ocean speedway in watsonville calif. on a friday nite, very professional,no whitney love song here,or someone trying to put there own spin on the anthem,a simple anthem performed very well, and by the way before the anthem is sung the crowd is reminded to please remove your hats, the worst anthems are love song renditions,or people who forgot the words,Most of the time the person that hires the singer, doesnt know what the National Anthem is,its not american idle either, its not a contest, its a simple song to be performed by someone that really cares about our nation, and please quit using a canadian singers, most of them dont know the words,as seen on the internet, too many blown anthems, hope u are listening, for those who hire anthem singers.

A couple years ago I filled in for the regular announcer at Cottage Grove for a modified event. We did not have an anthem singer that night and I played the recorded instrumentals of both the U.S. and Canada. Afterwards an older gentleman came up to the booth and 'congratulated' me on playing a correctly performed anthem...even though it was obviously recorded. Even though there was only a single Canadian driver there not one person complained that I played the Canadian anthem...CG is down in Oregon but there have been many Canucks racing there over the years so it was a non-issue to them. As far as recorded instrumentals vs live singers I'm guessing they must've just had a bad singer or two recently at the time. I've heard some awful live performances and truth is that I've seen it butchered so often I now everytime I go to the track I hope that I hear the proper instrumentals with no lyrics. It sounds better more often than not and the only potential problem is electrical sound issues. I never known a harmonica to be used but whatever, as long as it works. A hockey game I went to in Spokane this season had a young lady on the violin and it was so beautifully played she got quite the ovation from the almost full house of fans. I took in a junior hockey game in Canada that featured an American team visiting and they had live singers. The team did its homework as they got someone talented and also knew the words not only to their anthem but ours as well...they just nailed ours which I really appreciated. I wish more race tracks here at home would more to make sure our own anthem is respected and done right.
On a side note I also noticed last year at an NSRA pavement sprint race, which had a lot of Canadians, in Idaho how a little disrespectful some were towards our Canadian friends. I heard a few people, probably newbies, complain that the Canuck anthem was played. "This is America!" Whatever. I explained to them that it was tradition in sports, especially short track racing, to play the anthems of every country that has a driver competing. Those several Canadian drivers came to put on a show for us and we should show them the same respect that they show us. Would you rather they not come race and we have fewer cars and less of a show? I'm American but I have a lot of Canadian friends who have been good to racing down here in the states as some places especially near the border would have less of a show without the Canadian contingent on hand, both on track and in the grandstands. Give them some respect too and keep your hats off while Canada's beautiful anthem is playing. We're all friends around the campfire. My thoughts on that.

How can I get all the posts on this subject to be viewed by the operators of the Amzoil Speedway in Superior WI and Proctor Speedway in Proctor MN. I would like for them to see how the spectators feel about the anthems.

Singing our National Anthem good is not a requirement! Singing our National Anthem as good as you can and from the heart is. Mistakes happen, maybe this was the case, I don't know.
What I do know is no matter how good or bad the rendition is I always reflect, respect,
and always remove my cap if I am wearing one.

The best I have ever heard was prior to a Celtics game when a lady, seated at half court, played it on a harp. It was beautiful! The fans gave a very long ovation at the conclusion.
