Now in the good ole days of NASCAR & drag racing (1960s?) this discussion made some sense.....no mo
Wish I went to sprint car races back when the Chevies finally beat out the Offies tho! I remember Mickey Thompson's pioneering efforts to do the same at Indy, & Jim Clark's success at Indy back in 1963 (?) in a small block ford....them were the days!
Slight divergence; if you go to Speedy Bill's museum its amazing how many guys back in the day created wild flathead to OHV conversions, or OHC, or Chevies cut in half, or 2 Harleys stuck together... wild, crazy & creative!

Exactly rev, back in the day, before my time I must also say, but they use to actually make their own creations in the shops and frankenstein a real car into a power machine. Nowdays the parts all come in in a box of packing peanuts. Not that I think theres much wrong with that, you simply couldn't create these parts in the shop to the point they would compete or you would spend millions on the machines to mill and create them, and you also don't have all the R&D this way, its already been done.
All due respect to the original poster (Minthess) but I just watched this back and forth about the brands long enough and had to finally throw in my opinion on this matter. BTW I do consider myself a fan of Chevy's in day to day life, I've just never been able to convince myself that the screaming monster under the hoods of race cars was a chevy or any thing close to any of the major brands, at least I've never been able to get my Tahoe to perform like that.

LOL.... Everyone beating the same thing since 1955.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

mindless has changed but still crazy exaggeration to say the least. Last year his signature line said that Fords were dominating Late Model dirt track racing in the country. Now he's toned down his line, even though he's still soaking wet. Things are not going to change in 2012, no matter how much money Ford and Roush Yates spend.
2011 Chevy power: WoO champ Jason Meyers and Charlotte Finals Night champ Donny Schatz, BB Mod champ Matt Sheppard and Finals Night champ Tim McCreadie, WoO LM champ Rick Eckert and Finals Night LM champ Jimmy Owens as well as 98% of all 141 finals night entrants with Chevy power. Don O'Neal's captures the 2011 Knoxville Late Model Nationals, Jimmy Owens wraps up the title in the Lucas Oil LM series, USAC Sprint Car champion and USAC Silver Crown champion Levin Jones
and finally if you are lucky enough to see a blue oval powered car in any division at your local dirt track, that would rank as total domination by mindless.
|
Thanks for noticing that I like to keep things accurate unlike you. Owens runs a Ford as always and has a "dominating" point lead currently over another Ford and a Mopar.

The last I knew one of those locals builds their own engines too
|
RoushYates can actually save a racer money over a smaller "local" builder. If money was no object, Stenhouse could call Shaver etc who live sprint car stuff and have a 410 Ford ready in a week or 2. I doubt if Stenhouse is filthy rich. When JJ wins its because his stuff is more money. When TSR wins its just talent. LOL

Let's see.............................who drives for TSR? Oh yeah, Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz. You're so right, no talent there whatsoever. Must be blind luck that those two can win. WTF are you smoking? Minthess, mindless, whatever, quit killing the brain cells. :)

@ Speedkills: Just read a good article in recent Flatout about the guy who built HAL engines. These were flathead ford V-8 OHV conversions, no? I'm sure they had one at Speedy Bill's but I fergit....

They could sure do some crazy innovative stuff back in those days in the name of power. Think about some of the things they were putting together and its never been done before so the safety aspect was even so dangerous cause they didn't even know if the thing did start if it would just self implode. I know I'm just happy when I'm able to fix a non-running motor and get it running, let alone completely modify something and have it work.
Are we at a point today where we have hit the ceiling of what we can do with motors or is it that we don't have as many innovators? Its always fun to think about what the next big thing will be.

Seems like technology has made it expensive to innovate. How many people can afford a CNC machine?

Chevy has the best stroke and cylinder size combination out there! Look at the headers and you can see this! Two tight in the middle and two outside. For whatever reason it holds up!!You can make a Ford or Mopar crank but you better have some cash to keep up! Its the design of the small block chevy thats hard to beat!

Agree!
The only thing racing motors have in common with standard Chevy, Fords or MoPars are the firing order. Other than the firing order, EVERYTHING else is aftermarket right down to the valve covers!
|
even the firing order has changed if one so chooses , the 4-7 swap (for chevrolet) has been around for some time now, there isnt much of anything that hasnt been looked at , processed ,and altered since the small block V-8 was introduced to the plublic in 1955 for GM? I think the stroke combinations are far from reality to what one might think of , I remember trying to explain the 9/16 offset grind stroker to my dad years ago, he thought a 283 bored out to a 301 was the killer motor, then the 327 was hot, he was around when those type mills started producing just as much HP as the big blocks and lighter weight ! oe man, soooo much has changed, but I love that old school stuff, way ahead of its time, interesting to see the evolution of HP! ya, just gotta love some of that old iron in the Knox hall of fame. I cant wait to walk my uncle through there someday and see the grin on his face..

240 points is far from dominating in the Lucas Oil late model series at this point in the season.
What's more impressive is how Don O'Neal is dominating the big two of Bloomquist(2 wins) and Owens(0 wins) with seven wins so far with his Jay Dickens Chevy power.
