Stewart has driven Late Models over the years. I've got photos of him in on back in 2003 but it probably goes back further than that.

Smoke has been running dirt late models since at least 1998. During his Busch Grand National (Nationwide) career he ran a few UMP SummerNationals (Hell Tour) shows in central Illinois and got into a confrontation with a driver that resulted in the other driver trying to press assault charges when Smoke swerved at him under caution after the two of them wrecked. I believe the cops took both of them in for questioning before refusing to arrest either.
I don't remember many other details other than the feeling at the time was that the other driver was looking for his 15 minutes of fame.

most of these guys are driving for established late model teams. they just put new bodies and graphics on the cars for the drivers.
you don't think all these guys go out and buy late models and all the equipment to form a team just for this one race do you?
donny is driving a car owned by darrell lanigan.
some guys like bobby labonte and clint bowyer own full time late model teams. in that case those guys will drive cars they own that are normally raced by others.
to indy and beyond!!
