Back in the real olden days, when sprint cars often didn't have roll cages, there was a driver known far & wide as a man willing to push, bang, intimidate & in general be a true a##hole on the track. His name was Sonny Helms &, as another poster said; fate took care of Sonny.

Hey Shrek2259, I can tell some cool stories about John Viel racing at my RC track! He's still racing just on a much smaller scale and yes back in the day San jose Speedway and West Capital had some tuff racers and awesome events, running modifieds with the sprinters etc. I miss those days!!!

The Kansas City area was home to a guy named Art Dishinger in the long ago.He was called "DIRTY ART" and not in a nice way ! Art drove all over the midwest in all kinds of racecars and like Earnhardt,he didn't want his hard earned reputation to be cleaned up by anyone because he figured that it added to his "mystique".
When the local drivers took up a collection to reward the "pot" to whomever could put Art on his head,his question was :"How much do I get for every one that I can put on THEIR head ?" which prompted a number of the donors to go and ask for their money back ! He stands out in our history as unequaled in his ability to deal with all comers although he was one of those "little guys" who knew that when you were in a racecar everyone was the same size.His description of how to tell a driver from a racer is a classic from Bud Hunnicutt's "Up On The Wheel".

"Up on The Wheel" is one of the all time great old timer books...a must have!!! Bud's stories along with the pictures make you feel like you were there. Awesome book.

Hands down..........Junior Miller on Madhouse. This dude lives to wreck the Myers brothers. I know it isn't sprint cars but I couldn't resist. That show is so much fun I couldn't wait for the next week to get here. Terrible racing, they would go nuts if they saw a good sprint car race, but some funny stuff!

The real intimidater was not Dale Earnhardt. He wasn't a dirty driver like him either, and he was one of my all time favorite's. He scared the hell out of a lot of his fellow competitors because of his passion, his obsession to win every race he was in. Heat race, trophy dash, it didn't matter, he wanted to win them all!! They called him "mad dog".

Were you there the night Stockton Modified driver Tony Querillo (#100) won the main event at the old San Jose Speedway (Tully Road) in his first ever appearance at the track? I remember Fred Ede was highly agitated at the Stockton 99 Speedway champion, who's chief mechanic had dropped a super modified engine in the #100 car. It was amazing that he won the main against some of the best open wheel asphalt drivers on the west coast - in his first appearance. The car was owned by Nelson Santos of Tracy, who later became the car owner of a new #100 for former great Johnny Brazil of Manteca. That was a night to remember and I think several of the super drivers were not very happy.
