The Mack McClellan one was so horrific that they updated his condition on SportsCenter the following night for people who were watching the race - I think most people went to bed that night assuming that he had been killed.
Somewhere, someone right now is searching for "Rich Vogler fatal crash" on YouTube...people are awful sometimes.

That's the worst crash I remember ever seeing on film, although Kruseman's at the Sac Mile was bad too.
Kris - I'd be curious to know what the legal aspect is as well. I have a feeling that without a written contract or means of identifying that clip as yours, it's fair game. The answer to the second part of your question would be no, for example you can't record a Nascar race and post it on You tube.
Try to contact the guy listed at the end of the clip and let me know what you find out.

I didn't think he'd been killed, but to find out that he still has the use of both arms and hands is belated, but good news.
There are more than a few of us that are still around who remember what it was like before cages, and before they started using arm restraints with them. Actually there was more than one or two driver's out there who wouldn't use a belt before there was cages or restraints. Why? Fire!!

I saw that wreck live and I was alone. I figured I had just watched a driver die for the first time in my life and still marvel to this day that Mac came out of that as well as he did. They didn't re-play the crash that night but as soon as they knew he was alright ESPN did analyze what happened so that everybody could understand what took place and it probably did advance the safety of our sport quite a bit.

Wow, each of the crashes posted in this thread were horrifying. I don't mean to be ghoulish, but the worst crash I ever saw was Gordon Smiley's fatal accident at Indy.

I know all racing has obvious dangers and risks but I sometimes wonder about the logic behind some shows. I watched the WoO on the Springfield mile and it's just too fast for the protection offered by a sprint car or midget cage. Bristol was also very cool covered with dirt but they were buying their time till a fatallity happened. Glad they quit. It's all awesome and exciting when sprints, midgets or silver crowns are racing but IMO Sprints and midgets shouldn't run dirt miles. Good to hear these drivers recovered. Stay safe this year drivers, wear your restraints and nomex. Good Luck.

I remember ESPN interviewing him out on the lawn laying on the ground with a broken arm,and he was actually making joke's on camera. He had torn down the fence and light tree in 1.Wild night at PIR.
here's Corey at Sac.

Not sprint or midget, but the crash Stan Fox had on the green flag of the 1995 Indy 500 was horrifying. Look at the picture, with the nose of the car broken away and his legs and feet dangling in the air at around 200mph.

...here's Bob Cocconi crash at IRP.
..and the only reason I'm putting this crash up is to show how strong the car held up ,and saved the driver, but you got to love Bob's attitude and Dave Dispain getting the story...cool stuff.

Videographers, photographers, please help me. This is video I shot. I sold the rights to Lingner Productions to be used one time on thier program "Speedweek". How is that someone else has the right to put it on Youtube? Can anything that has been aired on TV be taped by someone and put on Youtube legally?

I guess Kris got mad and took his video and went home........

I guess I cannot see how someone would lose $$ on a video posted on you tube? I am not a legal expert but if this is the case than I would have to guess that 75% of the videos on you tube could be considered to have legal implications.

Came across this while browsing some nostalgia crash stories. I was at Springfield the day of the Drinan crash. Certainly seemed he was a goner when it happeend. 2 ambulances went to the hospital that day as Mark Gehrke suffered injuries in the same crash. Think he broke his leg or something along those lines.
For those familiar with the Springfield fairgrounds, a couple weeks after that race, I was driving around the backside of the grounds & could see the turn 3 fence where the crash happened. There is a small track fence & then a chain link perimeter fence outside of that. The chain link fence was noticeably deformed in that general area. I can only assume that Drinan's car rode along that fence for a bit during that massive ride. He would have been just a few feet from completely leaving the track. That woulda been a bad scene & could have involved pedestrian injuries as there is car & foot traffic thru that area.
I have unfortunately witnessed 3 fatalities at races I was at. All 3 at the IL State Fairgrounds. Dean Roper in an Arca race suffered a heart attack. A modified driver was killed in a crash on the mile around 2002 & Paul Graybrook died in his D2 midget a few years ago in the race they did at the rode arena temporary track.

Wow, that was a tumble and a half. About a dozen rolls in 2 seconds.
|
I asked Dan if that scared him to race again. He said no, and said he could not remember a thing about wreck. He woke up in middle of night in Springfield hospital and asked nurse where in the F am I. It was bad that someone called Dans parents and told them he was dead.

The other thing I heard about it was the first person to him was a photographer working in the infield. He got to him before the ambulance and apparently started CPR. There was a hellacious photo in the Springfield paper after this crash with Dan's arms exposed outside the cage & the car several feet in the air. It was truly a miracle he came out the other side. Let alone raced again. The midgets on the mile were a site. Only equaled by the outlaws running there a few times. Last time was late 90's.
The only thing crazier is the flat track bikes on the mile. Those guys are truly insane. Fun to watch tho.
