Interesting.
Macri comes from deep in the field and wins.
Marks makes the comment in victory lane how he hates fuel stop racing and the track was slick and he made the wrong adjustments.
Someone looks at what Macri did and thinks the track was great by his lap times.

The one point that Strawser brings up that is valid is the lack of a bottom groove much of the time. It doesn't have a thing to do with more water or less water. It has to do with them widening the track a few years ago. Up until that point, the top and bottom lanes were usually pretty equal. You could run either and keep up momentum lap after lap. But when they moved the inside fence in, it created a situation where to run the bottom, you have to scrub so much speed that even if you hit your marks right, it's like getting out of the draft at Daytona. The outside lane will literally freight train you. Now, a guy like Lance who's really good at it can swing down for a corner and make it work but the next corner, he has to run the middle across the center of the corner or up high to regain raw speed and momentum plus screw up the air for anyone behind him. I personally preferred it the other way when you could get lots of sustained, side by side racing as opposed to being forced to slide or die and take the air off the other guys front wing to complete a pass. Back then, watching Lance or Hodnett meticulously hit their marks perfectly and pick off cars one by one was a thing of beauty.
|
The track also looks much higher banked after they widened it and added the red clay a few years ago. I think that also plays into the topside being faster. You can still run the bottom and pass cars. Lots of guys did that all 3 nights but the guys who win most of the races now are the ones who ain't afraid to put that RR to the rail, especially in 1-2. I like seeing guys get hooked up on the bottom and shoot past the cars down the starights too but it's all good, as long as there is multi-grooves, lots of passing and back and forth action. Port provides that more often than any other 1/2 mile I know of.

Only the second time all year? Friday night the same guy started 21st got to 14th, got involved in the Wagner crash, restarted 23rd got back to ninth. I think there was only a few tenths difference in the times. One day was sunny the other cloudy.
There is another thing about his runs the last six or eight weeks. Is it time ask exactly who had been making who look good the past couple years. Many predicted a hard fall with the team changes.

Yea a lot of folks said wait till you see Devon go now. Macri will be missing his crew chief. I have nothing against Borden whatsoever, but, I think there is a lot more capable drivers out there than him. Unless he is bringing a sponsor or something to that team I don't see that relationship lasting.

I've never to Port Royal. I have watched a lot of races at Port Royal online in the last two years. I have pretty much always enjoyed the racing I've seen and don't recall ever thinking to myself that the track prep seemed bad. I come here and see endless, mindless talk about how bad the track prep is there. So here is my question. What makes it bad? Give me something tangible and measurable that could be changed and improved. Here is a sample of responses. Too much moisture on top of the track, not enough moisture on top? Too much moisture in the track, not enough moisture in the track? Too much sheepsfoot, not enough sheepsfoot? Too smooth, too rough? Too much moisture on the bottom, middle or top? Too much cushion, not enough cushion? Someone in the know, please tell me, in an intelligent manner, what is wrong with Port Royal's track prep. Again, intelligent answers only please.

Why the "F&^% "did you even bring this up?

Becasue I didn't know. I've never been there, but I see an absurd number of posts (albeit by one person apparently) about the track prep but never anything about what makes it bad and what could make it better. So I asked.
After watching 3 nights of racing and seeing passing on the top and bottom, races won on the top and bottom, tons of moving forward, hearing drivers say it needed to slicken off more, and none complain about it having too much grip, and no rubber, no dust, I'd say the track prep must be pretty darn good. So kudos from afar to whoever does the track prep at Prot Royal. I hope to get there someday.

He looked phenomenal last Saturday night(fair opener). I was expecting him to have a lot better Tuscarora 50 weekend.

Just ignore/excuse revjim, he believes he is the honorary law and order of this forum. If he don't agree with you he'll pound out 3 or 4 posts to prove he is the final word on everything.

Eris Smith, you ever get the chance, you won't be disappointed. The Tuscarora 50 is one of the top 5 races in the country.

Friday was great as well!!! I go with the eye test, not the stopwatch. I saw 8 of 9 races where the 1st and 2nd place finishers had at least one car not start 1st or 2nd. I bet any amount you like that won't be the case at the Natty Open., prelmi and final night probably 5 or 6 of 9 the front row will run 1-2/2-1 as usual.
Great event, great weekend, will be back every year I can possibly make it. Great job to all involved.

16 races friday and saturday 15 of them the 1st and 2nd place starting cars didn't finish 1st and 2nd. Again, I'll bet you anything you like that won't happen at the Natty, or you can change the subject again if you'd like.

BStrawser stop being a hateful clown your whole life. Everyone knows you didn't get the track prep job at Port Royal and now you hate everything about the track. For somebody that doesn't go to the Port, your life seems to revolve around bad mouthing this track. If you hate the track so much stop watching and commenting races there. Move on and get over it. People would like to hear opinions from someone besides the same hater with an ax to grind. It gets tiring and annoying that the same clown keeps bring up the same old unjustified critisism about the track. Racers and fans alike from all around the country absolutely love coming to Port Royal. Flo Racing says these shows are some of the most viewed racing streams in the USA. This track is becoming a destination for out of town race fans because of the great racing and terrific job the track does with all of its improvements. PA is lucky they have such a great track being led by a group/fairboard with such wisdom and foresight. Please go away!!!!
(Try to comment about the great hot dogs at Lincoln, or delicious French Fries at the Grove. Stop all this ignorant track prep talk, it makes you sound stupid and hateful)

You go with the eye test? That's a dumb way to watch races. You might think it was a good race but how do you really know? I'll stick with the tried and true method of hot lap times to know if I see a good race or not.

I was told the entire story as to why he had an axe to grind, but had a few drinks and forgot the details. However, with the love the entire racing world seems to have with the Port, and his nonstop rambling and rumbling about the racing, it is apparent there is WAY more to this than "I just don't like the track surface"...............way more. I wish he'd just come clean and admit the real reason he hates the track and Razr Steve. I had a long conversation with Razr Steve and he could give two rats asses about what Strawser thinks about the track prep. He seemed a little more concerned with loading up the grandstands and pit area and getting them all to come back. Seems to be working-----minus 1 guy. I think he'll take those results.
