I believe Bob Trostle's new car for maybe 1976 or 77 or 78 was the beginning of huge weight reductions. It was in either Wolfgang's book or Trostle's book, probably both.   Wolfgang was hounding Trostle to buy one of those hot "new" and expensive, at the time, Gaerte engines that some owners were starting to spend big money to buy.  Trostle wasn't going to spend that kind of money so the two of them started talking about the next best thing, cut weight.  So they started to cut weight anyplace they could, even endangering the safety of the car and driver to drop weight anyplace they could.  Months later,(and I looked it up) they put her on the scale and were stunned when the number said 1,480 pounds, down nearly 500 pounds.  It didn't take long for other drivers and owners to walk by that car and see how different it looked from their car.  And the weight game was on.
