Does anyone here think that the Chili Bowl is a tad bit overrated?
|
Yes.
The entries need to be cut down by at least a third and there should be some sort of requirements to be able to race in it.
An MMA fighter has a ride this year for F's sake.
Kevin Eckert said it best. "The young kids treat it like a job audition, and the old guys treat it like a fishing trip."

Don't entirely disagree..................but how does this make it overrated?

Not for the real racers that show and not for the race fans that show up it isn't. Sometimes the money really is an after thought compared to the accomlishment.

I love the Chili Bowl, to me it is second only to the Nationals in atmosphere. But having said that there are flaws.
If you don't like the beating and bumping, its not for you. Not a doubt a bigger track would make for "cleaner" racing.
Its now 6 days, up from 5 last year. Less cars each night ( <60 vs >75) which is good.
6 days of racing is bordering on overkill and the stands will be 2/3 full the first 4 nights. Plus 6 nights of hotel/food/etc is getting expensive.
I think the payout is pretty bad, but that is not my problem. Lots of people on this forum complain about it, but to my knowledge none of them own, rent or drive a car. Until drivers/owners complain to Hahn it will remain as it is.
I enjoyed watching Donnie run the Chili Bowl and I will miss him not running it. He ran it as a favor to Stewart and Clauson and he fulfilled those obligations.

I don't know about overrated, they say the racing is good and I have watched the final night on LORTV the past two years. My thing with the Chili Bowl is the idea of fighting the wife for more than my fair share of the family vacation budget so I can drive 1,000 miles in the winter to sit in a noisy fume filled building for a week. If the wife and the drive don't get me sitting that long in that building would. ;)

Went to the chili bowl for the first time this year. It was awesome. I've heard people say the purse doesn't matter its all about the prestige. But I agree, I think it could increase. The random Tuesday night feature paid $6,363 and it was a short race lined up by pill draw...

I dunno. I've never been there, but a lot of people have and they keep going. Maybe Kevin Eckert is overrated?

On a side note, was watching the highlight videos of World of Outlaws races and this one dude says in alot of the videos where Schatz wins "he only wins on big tracks". While he may win alot on bigger tracks, he has won quite a few short track races. At least I think so, I know hes won at Chico, Willamette, Cottage Grove and that short track in North Dakota(drawing a blank).

Who said that?
The only places Schatz struggles at is really heavy smaller Tracks like Haibstadt. Everywhere else he’s a winner.

Some guy on you tube. Had a good laugh at his comments. Has Schatz ever won at Haubstadt? Seen the Outlaws there a couple times and it seems he is usually around 5th or so.

In the post race interview at the Tuscarora 50 Schatz said something about playing around with the 2019 rules the last few races and then stated they kept finishing 2nd or worse.
Must be nice to feel confident enough you got the season in the bag to start experimenting with 15 races left in the year.
Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Rod I believe he said they have NOT finished worse than 2nd so it gives him confidence in the 2019 package rules.

On Saturday... watching Thorson alone was worth the 26 hours of driving.

Wow, from where? You drove that far for ONE day?
I drove from Denver, I forget, maybe 10-12 hrs (for the whole thing) Broke it up into 2 days, Kansas drive can be brutal....

Sorry, might been misleading... 26 hour roundtrip from Ohio. Actaully might've been closer to 28 total. We broke it up into 2 days going down but drove straight thru coming back on Sunday.
