So how was the racing? Were the 305's and 360's competitive with the 410's? Did it just slow down the 410's so that the smaller motors could keep up? Does it boil down to everyone running the same hard, small rear tires? Out of curiosity, are most of the tracks on the smaller side?

I am not an expert, so if I am off base then I am sure someone else will chime in.
The racing was definetly competitve.
An average sized track in Michigan is 3/8ths. Some are slightly smaller. SOD ran at a 1/2 mile. The first race there was won by a 360. The second race there the same 360 finished 2nd. One thing alot of Michigan tracks have in common is the fact that they are dry slick. This also plays a part on what helps keep the cars competitive.
Yes, it does boil down to the same hard, small tire.
For lack of better words you could say it slowed down 410s to make the smaller engines more competitve. I would say that the tires combined with the types of tracks made it so often the best, smoothest driver on the night won. It eleminated the high dollar teams dominating because of better equipment.
I would be curious to see how the rules package played on a heavy, fast track. Time will tell.
