Does anyone know the horsepower & top speeds for each class? 410,360,305,midget, mini, and micro?
Let me know how you know, ie dyno, track speeds, research etc. I'm just not finding this info other than the 410, thanks.

Sooooo many variables involved in this convo. I'm assuming you mean "in a vacuum" and not like real life, but maybe I'm wrong. Top speeds, HP, etc. will vary by track and conditions and engines (i.e. WoO teams will have a "big track" engine and a "small track" engine). Top speed on a bullring will obviously be different than at Kville. That said I'm assuming you mean like the highest of each HP, speed, etc. Paul McMahan holds the highest AVERAGE speed of 145 mph he set at Rolling Wheels a few years back while with CJB. Again that's average speed, on the straights some have speculated he was going 175-180 which is ridiculous (the speed, not the claim).

I believe I seen where Knoxville at a 15.000 second lap time is a 120 mph average speed.
With that fact I would guess it to be a top speed of somwhere between 130-140 mph at its peak on the straight a ways.
That is Knoxville!!
I thought I heard someone say they reached top speeds of 150 mph at Eldora! I find that hard to believe.
I believe I heard Sammy mention the speeds of Syracuse when they raced there upwards of around 160 mph!!
That's Super Hoowaaa crazy speed there!!

I remember the last time WoO was at Bridgeport on the 5/8th mile you could see the vapor trail coming off of Sammy Swindell’s wing. I think they said top speeds at the end of the back stretch were close to 150. And didn’t Pauch hit like 170 at Syracuse in a 410?

Sammy Swindell did a lap of 24.719 at the Springfield Mile in the late 90's. 145+ avg MPH. I'd have to guess he was pushing 170+ at end of straightaways. I was there & the engine noise did not appear to change at all in the corners. Appeared that he didn't lift at all. He may have slightly to set the car but it was not audible. It was pure insanity.

The problem with alot of those "average" speeds is that the tracks are not the actual length advertised. Rolling Wheels and OCFS are advertised as 5/8ths, but I highly doubt it. VOlusia and Eldora were once listed as 1/2's although Eldora has been adjusted to reality.
Knoxville is a true 1/2...probably a pretty big 1/2. Bridgeport is a true 5/8ths. So the averages there are more believeable.
However if you are going to try to get a straightaway speed by extrapolating it from average speed, the average speed needs to be accurate.
EDIT: Sorry that wasn't meant as a reply to the post that was quoted, just a general reply to the thread.

I think you can say the cars are tickling 160+ at some places would be accurate. It may seem like the lap times arent changing but if you ask any crew chief the cars are getting faster and faster!

I understand that all the tracks are different, I'm just looking for the fastest a car has gone in a race in each division.
I'm trying to classify each one for a project, for example a 410 produces 900+ horsepower with a top speed of 160.

Thought I remembered reading that they hit 177/178 at Syracuse back in the day. Pauch maybe? Cant remember who it was or what year. But thats damn fast.

Williams Grove has that on their site. I don't think it is exceedingly accurate (Big Blocks weigh significantly more than 410s yet are listed with the same top speed for instance). It might be somewhat helpful though.

Doty mentioned at the beginning of the broadcast of the 1st Bristol race in 2000 that a highway patrol trooper clocked Sammy with a radar gun at 151mph going into turn one. I find it hard to believe any track has been much faster. We all know that many tracks fudge on thier track size to inflate transponder track speeds.

Why doesn't someone bring a radar gun to the track and get our answer for us?

Does any one remember when I think it was Lasoski drag raced his Sprint Car against a top pro-stock racer (I want to say Warren Johnson) at a NHRA show for exhibition? Just curious what his top speed was when they did that. I know it it irelivant to a dirt track but still interesting. I dont remember the results but I thought it was a 2 out of 3 deal and it was real close each race.

Sprint car races aren't won on the straights. They're won on how you get in to a corner, maintain speed and get off the next corner. A huge straight away speed hurts if too much momentum is scrubbed off. High speeds equal a taller gear, a tall gear equals more time to recover the momentum needed to get down the next straight. Straight away speed can be an illusuion in some instances. How many times have you seen a car eat up the distance between it and the car it's competing with on a straight? Has more to do with how that driver got off the previous corner than flat out speed.

It's just a question! NASCRAP have corners just like Sprintcars do but they like to boast their top speeds. It's a simple fact that I'm sure a lot of people wonder about. It's not like asking how fast they need to go to have vapor trails coming off all of the wing tips where you need a degree in Environmental Science or Motion. He just wants to know how fast they go. Perception & Realism can vary alot.... You sit in the top row at Knoxville when the track is at its fastest and you might guess 120 mph?? You go down on the ramp behind Doug Clark, grab your cajones and watch them scream by you and it seems more like 150 mph...

You can buy radar devices at a, reason price these says.
We used one to measure 135-136 at the end of the straight at various half mile tracks in PA and even tho Eldora is about 500 feet shy of a half mile, we measured similar speeds at the Kings Royal weekend several years back.
Lincoln 1845 ft/.35 mile T1=118MPH
Eldora 2287 ft/.43mile T3=135MPH
Port 2716 ft/.51 mile T3=TBD
Grove 2792 ft/.53 mile T3=135MPH
Selinsgrove 2847 ft/.54 mile T1=136MPH

weather." Van May

I appreciate the OP's question for his research. IMO super high speeds used to be kinda cool but now I find that it equates to seriously boring follow the leader racing.

Not sure what the TOP speed was, but adjusting track sizes based on GPS measurement, the fastest AVERAGE speed for a WoO sprint car in a qualifying run belongs to Sammy Swindell at the Springfield Mile on 6-7-98. 24.710 on a 1.03 mile track for an average speed of 150.06 mph. (Track measured at the mid point between inside & outside walls all the way around.)

They must have measured it at just a 1.0 mile back then. I found an article that listed the time and average speed. I remembered the time was 24 something just couldn’t remember the exact #. It remains one of the most unbelievable things I have seen at a racing event. Pure raw speed and big balls in the drivers seat

Who is the resident mathematician? Run the numbers and see what is mechanically possible with the gear, RPM and tires sizes.
