When I went to Eldora in the middle 70's the track sounded the same. One huge dust bowl. From what I've seen in person and on TV the track has never had the right "dirt" or else it has never been prepared correctly. Obviously it hasn't been good clay as you couldn't put water back on clay after being run in (unless it's chopped up) and Baltes would run that water truck around just to settle the dust the first few laps, and make the track slick very briefly. Then, the dust would be back. I wasn't there this year... but the dust bowl doesn't sound much different than it was in the 70's. Go to Riverside/West Memphis for real clay.

There are videos on youtube that prove this. When I was there in '94 there was a lot of dust compared to what I'm used to. Lets face it, it's Eldora, changes and all, It's still a place to win at before the journey is over.

I was there in 96...

Tons of dust but I figured that's what the glasses were for?

Seems like I saw a T-shirt there that said;

"If ya aint gettin dirt in yer beer... You aint racin"

Heck, I remember being at the Big E for the final All-Star show back in the 90's when Steve Seigel won the race in the famous yellow 33 Posse car, see what happens when you leave the porch! Eldora has always been in my top 5 favorite tracks and it will continue to be there. Having said that, they gots to hire a Track Prep man and work the surface a few days a week, EVERY week. Take It Easy.....

PS BRR, you have a history of being mistaken, don't get me started....

Save your energy and save your arguments with Hawker. It's not about the dirt, it's all about kissing BRR's ass for some reason. If indeed he has been involved in racing as he says he has, then he has surely seen worse. I have been treated to great races and not so great races everywhere I have been. Dust flies at more than don't. I remember reading all the accolades that Gas City was getting a few years back, and yet have seen some of the dustiest races ever at that place. Same goes for Knoxville and the Grove. They all have their moments. Bottom line is that you make of it what you will, my life is too great to let the silly shit ruin it for me.

Hawker, if it's the money you are worried about, I told you before that my place is open to you and about any sprint traveler. Ask Pincushion, I am a fine host and he spent less than $75 on gas and lodging ($25 of that on a Cincy motel Thursday night) and I picked him up in Columbus on Tuesday and dropped him off on Sunday. So expenses can be cut. We saw Limaland, Lawrenceburg and two days of Eldora. I think it's just the company you keep that's the problem.

all you idiots need to read the post again...i expect dustbowl conditions, just not crappy racing.

I DID NOT START THE THREAD (the dust has been worse many times in the past 10 years). these fans are entitled to their own opinions, the Ohio Parliament blaming them for having reservations about returning is a very piss poor way to grandstand your own "support of the sport" after having made several posts earlier in the year "just wait til the KR, the track will be better".

you MSPN @$$kissers sure get off on singling others, but IGNORE that he has been whining about Eldora conditions longer than anyone alive, that is if you believe his claims that he talked to Tony years ago about the problem...probably another myth?

or maybe a night at the movies?

...slow your roll there big shot...if I am one of the "idiots" that made the "just wait til the KR, the track will be better" posts you are referring to...

...A...the track IS getting better...but I guess you knew that from your one and only visit to the place this year...

...and B...is it really the track's fault that Donny Schatz flat out stomped the field ?...outside the race for the lead there was passing all through the field...what don't you get ?...Schatz stomped them !...its the first time that has ever happened at Eldora...I don't see you up on your soapbox complaining about the racing, or measuring the track, or bringing radar guns, or any of that other horseshit when Schatz ANNUALLY stomps the field at Williams Grove...seems you just look for something that has to do with Ohio to bitch about...

...and speaking of myths...MSPN @$$kisser is funny...I have not had any contact with the man since he called to offer his condolences on the loss of my Dad (thanks again Mike for your words of wisdom)...yet YOU have a daily conversation with him on this very message board...

...another classic case of PA guy opens mouth and inserts wooden shoe...LOL!

Since people seem to have gotten off track and this has devolved into a series of personal attacks, I re-read the initial post and offer the following summary of Hawkers original post:

Atmosphere – great

Facilities – liked

"Locals" – appear to be most knowledgeable

Speed – awesome

Saldana tempting the wall – fun

Saldana Friday – big nads

Slide jobs – blast to watch

Set ups of passing – cool watching

Stands – good time, more fun than the National, happy drunks

Track prep – worst

Format – worst

Entrance to track – add gates

Rules – inconsistent: WoO or KR?

WTF – Saturday Dash restarts/jumping calls

Return visit – yes/no/doubtful

Speed plant – Belleville or Eldora – Belleville wins.

For the most part sounds like a good time and most of the frustration was in the track prep and format. Based upon some of the comments above, I don't think Hawker is in the minority there. All of the negatives are fixable and the KR can be even better.

Jumping on the guy for expressing his opinion may be the WTF of this string.

don't look for me to spend another dollar coming out there again this year to witness another round of experimentation on how to apply water to clay. Nelligan is more vocal about the DUST than the Posse Fans are. i do not expect ANYTHING to change in conditions there unless it RAINS during the event, this is from years of watching the dust fly on hotlap session #1.

if my screen name was "nodust" you might have a point, but i expect the conditions to always be dry, but the racing does not have to suck too...there are many years where the dust flew and the cars were not soft pedalling at 97.548 MPH!

so tell me again, why it is my fault that others are complaining about the track condition?

maybe you are just pissed off that actual TRACK MEASURMENTS and T3 SPEEDS have been documented...

Hawker,

I appologize for not giving the advice as to where to sit when you had your previous Kings Royal Virgin post on here. Seriously if you do not like dust then 3 & 4 is not the place for you at Eldora. Eldora is one of the few tracks that I have been to that you can eat a ton of dirt in one area (3 - 4) and virtually none in other areas. That is why I always sit in the grandstands at the Big E. We had no problem with the dust whatsoever last weekend in the grandstand as Bill W. noted. Your complaints from this past weekend sound all too familiar to me. They are the same complaints that I have heard from many older people in the past who are no longer attending Sprint Car races. I have always just considered these type of grips as their own personal justification for not going anymore and if it makes them feel better so be it. Perhaps it's just old age catching up to ya. For cryin out load its dirt racing!!! I love it and I plan on attending races for many years to come.

By the way BRR did not even jump on the band wagon as being overly critical on his visit here this year until he was provoked a little. I respect you for that BRR as I know that you would not appreciate me doing the same after one of my visits to the Grove for the National Open. It's the classy thing to do Hawker.

Coachbob, you can't be that bitter over the Posse taking the top 4 spots in the beanbag tournament, lol! Thanks for doing that again, I hope Dennis spent his winnings on a Lucas Wolfe shirt!

Chris, aka gasitup71, why didnt you come over to turn 3 with swamp and get introduced to Eldora posse style? Is Gas City worth the trip instead of hanging with Posse brethren at the Big E?

Buzzkill, nice post, maybe these guys will start to get it. Go Brian!

...Clint...since our trip to Pa got cancelled this year, my brother-in-law and I decided that we would make it over to Gas City for a change this year...we both are those crazy types that like non-wing cars as well...had nothing to do with wanting to miss you guys...Swamp and I tried to look for you guys at the Doty, but we were not sure if you guys had come in early or not...Saturday we sat in the middle section between 3 and 4...looked for one of your crew to walk buy, guess I just couldn't see you guys through the horrible dust (excuse the sarcasm, I can't help it)...last year I saw Smitty back and forth the whole night with two of those big, purple Crown Royal cups...was he in a disguise this year ?...LOL !...

...sorry I missed the posse crew...the season is not over yet...all the best...

shoes: 1-2 has a crappy view of the action directly in front. due to the greater distance from the track to the grandstands you can barely see the wings over the wall...tried it up there 2 times and will pass.

BRR, I have talked to Tony about track conditions at Knoxville, Sedalia and often at the Big E, before and after he bought the place. He is more frustrated right now I'll bet than any of us in here. I never saw him this past weekend (apparently he wasn't at the movies Saturday, go figure?) but have been told by a regular Eldora racer who has spoken with Tony that there will be changes made. We can only hope so. Personally, I would love to see Joe's Son, Chad, take the controls again. It seems that Earl was grooming him for the job for years, not too sure what happened though? I will be back to Eldora and it will be great again, I have faith. Take It Easy.....

I have been going to sprint car races at Eldora since 1967, here are my views of this years Royal and the track.

It didn't SEEM like the KR this year, although I was battling the flu. I even gave my Friday tickets up.

The track prep could have been better, no doubt.

I think they had the track bone dry to get the cars up to the fence. Unfortunately there was not much material to get any traction up there.

I have sat EVERYWHERE at Eldora at one time or another, you always get some dirt. It varies due to location, track conditions, wind, etc. I have never had to wear goggles, I guess I have developed an immunity to the dirt. And I am usually in turn 4 terrace.

I have no doubt that Tony will continue to improve the track, I really think he loves the place as much as we do.

Another issue is the amount of haulers in the infield, it makes it hard to see the middle on down in turn 2, the backstretch wasn't as bad this year.

There were more non drinkers in turn 4 than drinkers, at least in my general vicinity.

I'll be back for next years Royal, plus the Sept. Outlaw race.
