I am from Jacksonville, IL. and someone had already mentioned the Jacksonville Speedway (now called Morgan County Speedway I think). http://www.stevehardin.com/htm/jacksonville.htm The speedway here is at the Morgan County Fairgrounds. It has been used for auto racing for many decades, dating back as far as the 1940's or before. They started racing there on the half mile horse track before the 1/4 mile track was built (I would imagine out of safety conserns). The fairgrounds were used by General Grant to camp at one point during the civil war and were out on the edge of town until the 1950's or around that time period. Since then housing developments have sprung up on all sides except in the direction towards the center of town where the Illinois School for the Deaf is located. There have been many complaints over the years about the noise from the speedway and they have instituted a curfew like so many other tracks have done. Everyone knows the track is there and that it was there long before anyone bought or built any houses in that area. I would imagine that just about any fairgrounds raceway has experienced this same problem. I have been to many racetracks throughout the midwest over the years, some are with us still that are in cities like here, Farmer City IL, Macon IL, Knoxville IA, Granite City IL and others, some are gone now like Joe Shaheen's little Springfield IL. http://www.thevintageracer.com/articles/springfield1.htm http://www.freewebs.com/springfieldsspeedway/index.htm Godfrey IL, and many others like Ascot Park in CA (I had the great fortune of seeing one of the last WoO races there in 1990). All we can do is to support the tracks that are still in existence and hope that good race promoters with deep pocket continue the fad of buying them up and keeping them going!

I wouldn't say that Mercer, PA, Sharon, PA, or Lincoln, PA are right in town. All 3 are more on the edge of town. Same with Attica, OH. It is near town, but it is surrounded on 3 sides by farm land.

Port Royal is more of an "in-town" track as is Dixie Speedway in Georgia. In town tracks are always at the mercy of development and noise restrictions. The problem is that most of these tracks were built years ago and then "town" grew up around them.

Hutchinson Farigrounds - Hutchinson, KS.

The track in Colby, KS. is also right off the main street, can't recall the name.

Their used to be a track in a little town in northwest Arkansas called Pea Ridge. Never got the chance to go there, but was told by my dad that it was literally in someones' back yard. It just closes a year or two ago.

Parramatta City Raceway, in Sydney AUS, Archerfield in Brisbane, AUS and maybe Grand Forks, ND? Take It Easy....

PS Perth AUS had a great one I can't remember but sure had fun at a few times, an outdoor pub in turn four might be one of the reson's why, Cong Migro ran it, that I do remember....

Talking about pubs, Premier Speedway Warrnambool is a little out of town but so was the pub on New Years!!! Remember?
