I have heard Bruce Ellis on the mic in Knoxville......he would be good for Kyle to pay attention to. Sometimes learning what NOT to do is just as important as learning from the best.
|
I was thinking the same thing... having to listen to Bruce during the nationals.. would just ruin my nationals! lol

My name is Kyle Luetters and I am one of the new announcers at the Knoxville Raceway this season. This past weekend was my second evening in the booth at the legendary half mile oval.
I am aware that we have had numerous issues when it comes to the announcers booth. I sincerely apologize and I will not make excuses.
Simply put, we need to get better to deliver the outstanding performance that you have come to expect and deserve at the Knoxville Raceway.
I do believe that part of this will rectify itself with the passage of time. Being more familiar with things (drivers, names, the crowd, etc. etc.) will put us more at ease.
However, there are other issues, like the ones mentioned above, that must be addressed and I appreciate them being pointed out. It allows us to work on how to improve things so they do not happen again. During the course of a race night, the program moves so quickly that we do not get much of a chance to dwell on mistakes.
That being said, if there are any other issues or things you, the fans, would like to see us do, please let me know either on this thread or you can reach me by e-mail at [email protected].
The Knoxville Raceway has a very special place in my heart and being asked to contribute there is a high honor. I can only ask for your ideas, constructive criticism and patience as we work the bugs out in the booth.
Thanks,
Kyle Luetters

If you're work ethic is half the size of your enormous stones for making this post, then i reckon you'll get better fast. Like I said, I couldn't do it. I would sound like a moron and screw up everything. Probably drop a few f-bombs too. Maybe someday we're begging Kyle to come back cause the new guy John Johnson sucks.
My advice is worth less than two cents, but I would say 1) stop trying too hard to make the moment. You rush it, force it, try to add extra information in every sentence and mistakes happen. 2) be original. using someone elses tired phrases or cliches feels forced and frankly sometimes corny. 3) I listened to an interview of the late Pat Summerall once who is widely thought of as the best NFL announcer of all time and when asked about his secret he said he let the game speak for itself, less is more sometimes, and he let what his eyes saw tell the story through to his words.
Good luck... think you should change your stage name to Norm S. Stones,

Having made comments a couple weeks back on the announcing at Knoxville, I had to come back and follow them up. After watching last night's 360 nats opener, it is very apparent Kyle and buddy have stepped up their game and are starting to feel comfortable. Well done boys. "Stars and cars" , I like that one.

I hate to dog on people giving it their all but they are almost unlistenable. Maybe I was spoiled by all the years of BockhoveN and Zoch.
More weight, more regulation, more similarity in the
cars.... that will ensure plenty of thrills for years
to come. Only the most average talent behind the
wheel will be needed with such awesome equipment on
the track!

That was Bryan Hulbert of ASCS National Tour & Kris, the other weekly announcer last night.

Where is Peewee when Knoxville needs him???
|
Thanks Sprintfanatic! I might have to send an email this offseason given the civil unrest about this situation all season on Hoseheads.

I listened tonight and one of the announcers is absolutely terrible. Butchering household names like Sam Hafertepe...changing people's names from Trey Starks to Trey Parks...to saying drivers are from North Dakota instead of New Jersey...to not muting his mic when we were waiting for a comfirmation on Ambers health saying ridiculously unrespectful things...

Why not make knowing the local drivers part of the job description? There's 5000 people at knoxville for every weekly race you'd think one of em could announce.

Exactly. Saying names wrong, the "battle for 2nd" when its actually for 3rd, and a battle for 7th that is worth talking about for two laps while during that time there has been a pass for the lead as well as 3rd. IF I were to give one bit of advice, watch tapes and practice!!!

These guys are doing fine. They're getting more comfortable and better each week. How many people have started a new gig and kicked ass right out of the gate? Just need to find their own groove and stop trying to be Johnny Gibson or make the races sound like the WWE. Doing fine guys.
I do have to give a shout out to Mike Roberts. He has to be the best and most knowledgeable pit reporter in the country. The guy knows sprint cars top to bottom.

I really enjoy Mike Roberts. Very knowledgeable. But, I am not a huge fan of the "stars and cars", nor the rest of his announcing. Not an easy job--I understand. I think Kyle Luetters will be good given some time. At the end of the day, I'll be fortunate to be at the races this week and won't be able to hear the announcing when the green flag drops.

I thought the announcers were fine the past 2 nights. You guys act like the previous announcers didn't mispronounce names and get things wrong (see "Henry Cap").

I remember people thinking Justin Zoch was horrible when he first started too, now they wish he'd come back becuase over time he became "very good".
As far as the "open mic" comments, you couldn't hear them in teh stands where I was sitting, maybe the cushion.com has a different set up and you can still hear people talk (remember, race control is also in that same room, so they are in communication with officials and safety workers that are on the track).

Jack Miller set the standard of which we will never hear again. But that doesn't mean that we will never hear another great announcer.
Kyle is a friend and a class act, he lives and breathes this sport just like the rest of us. Rome wasn't built in a day, over time he will be just fine, so give him a break.

You are wrong Johnny Gibson, you did not "suck" when you first started. You were really good when you first started announcing for the WoO and you just put the polish on it as you announced more races. Kyle is already a full lap ahead of a lot of people, stepping up and accepting responsibility for his mistakes and is willing and wanting to improve. Even answering those who refuse to disclose who they are while posting "constructive" comments. It is Nationals week, relax ya'll.
