i understand that the tethers are intended as a saftey feature. i also understand that there still may be some unintended consequences with their use that is of safety concern.

there also is a cost factor involved. we all know that theoretically cost should not impact safety concerns, but none the less, for some it does.

when costs get too much, no matter what it involves, it tends to lead to less participation.

some solutions to the problem of the axle or other parts tethered to the car getting back into the cockpit involve adding additional tethers. that is fine, but then it adds additional cost. if a set of tethers cost $200, then you double it with one additional set installed. then you also have to have a least one spare axle with two sets of tethers. now you are up to $800.

the problem of solving the expense for the tethers by some seems to be not to race if or until you can afford the added saftey equipment.

well i thought the idea was to try to grow the sport and raise car counts, not to shrink things by having people stay home because they can't afford the sport.

i don't know what the solution is, but limiting participation because of expense doesn't sound like we are going in the right direction.

there is alot of weight in your words Buzz, the costs are a valid topic, Take for instance, I wreck my 2 1/2" dia $850, axle,  later in the shop during the week Ill try part it out,  the hubs are bent axle is shot, shocks both have bent shafts/bodies (that is suspension but realistically they are toast,), not axle, I run aluminum shock eyes to try save my shocks of incident occures, the costs are climbing as we go on, front wing, bumper, arms, ect) ,but i part out the axle (the remaining pieces) to assemble another axle, MANY MANY racers do,  the spindles survived, the hubs are cracked and bent, brakes survived, Luckily I use steel rotors but that $70 piece is shot as well, luckily meaning it wasnt titanium,  so with just the axle i have damaged $400-500 in components, the clamps for the axle tethers survived, but i did tear one tether, lets say the pro-rated price for that is $65?? (im assuming butlerbuilt will sell individual items) i didnt have enuff damage to sideline my operation for the night, but, the costs are still high, I drove 3hrs to attend the night, my crew grabs the 2 1/4" spare i have in the trailer, another $200 on tethers is on that axle, simply because its a different diameter and i needed three of the four components anyway, you'll proubly save $25 vs the entire kit,  so in theory, I have switched out 2k in items in the night just from a brief, innocent looking, " tap" from the grandstands..  we havent even added up my RR i purchased, the wheel and tire that got destroyed, wing mounts and wing,22gal of methanol, pit gate, bumper,Diesel at 10mpg to the races and 200 miles. the costs are just astronimical. has the start $$ for the A  gone up yet? I think I will settle for start n park for the night, my wallet is starting to get a bit tierd, so the fans enjoy that type stuff? I guess who are we looking out for here? If I told the first microphone that was stuck in my teeth, that " I choose to park the car because I overspent , but ive got new tethers on my car" would the fans boo me? just a observation, be carefull what one wishes for..   good chat fellas..
