Who fills the ride? How will the WoO bring people in w/o "King Kinser? Thoughts?

My dad took me to a racing banquet when I was a kid.  The keynote speaker was awesome and before the end of the night he was one of my favorite drivers.  He told one story about driving a sprint car down the backstretch, looking down to check the guages and waking up in the hospital.  He was very funny and a very accomplished pubic speaker.

The next spring there was a big crash at the start of the Indy 500.  My newly adopted racing hero Eddie Sachs was gone and I was devastated.  I got over it, racing didn't stop, new favorte drivers came and went over the years but the one constant was cars going fast on dirt and turning left.

The sport and the Outlaws will do just fine after these old guys retire.  I'm pretty sure that if you sat down one on one with Steve he would tell us who his heroes were when he was a kid.  I think too that he'd tell us that he's very fortunate to have done so well over the years and that the future of the sport doesn't revolve around him.  Only fans worry about all these coulda, shoulda, woulda questions.  Drivers are too busy to pay any attention to that stuff.

Ya mean people have been going to the WoO shows to see "way past their prime" Kinser and Swindell these past several years?  Ya kiddin me!  People attending the races today could give a crap if they are there or not.  Two years ago Swindell didn't run more than half the WoO races.  I don't see anything changing at all.  The same guys who have been at the top of the top 5 night in and night out will still be there, nothing will change.  The stands will continue to be packed.  Personally, I was a great fan of Kinser until the 2nd time he tried to destroy the WoO, that was it for me, once was forgivable, the USA Sprints, twice shame on me,  the hell with him.  As Ted Johnson lay there in his death bed and giving one last interview to either Flat Out or Sprint Car and Midget magazine, the interviewer asked him to comment on drivers and when the interviewer mentioned Steve Kinser, all he said was "no comment", i.e., my mother told me if you can't say anythign nice about someone, don't say anything at all".  But my mom didn't tell me that.

When you say people can give a crap if Steve and Sammy are there or not............ Who is the people? You? Your friends? Your family?

whatever the case you can't speak for an entire nation of outlaw fans, why don't you say you don't care instead of the statement you make. If it's your opinion then fine it's yours and your entitled to it. But don't speak for everyone Sir cause you can't , swindell is not past his prime winning the kings royal in 2012 ...... Pretty impressive  win along with what 13 wins in 2012  leading or tying for wins in the season.i am not disrespecting you either I just  know you can't speak for everyone that's all so let's be civil

The WoO should retire Kinser's #11 after the season and Stewart should pick up Brian Brown as his 2nd team for 2015.

Those are both great suggestions.
Brian Brown has shown huge progress as a driver in the last few years and continues to do so. He has certainly paid his dues IMHO, and he's had some success going on the road as their team has been able to do so.  While there's certainly nothing wrong with the equipment Brian is driving or the team he is with now, I think it would be very interesting to see him get a shot at a ride with one of the best funded teams on the WoO tour.  He seems to do a great job on the PR end of the deal and he's certainly made a lot of fans in the midwest over the last decade or whatever.

And as far as retiring Steve's number; absolutely.

WHATS UP WITH ALL THIS BS!!!!

So, let me see if I can capture what everyone is saying here.  "Without Steve and Sammy, the WoO is dead."

Therefore, by using this logic...What the WoO needs is a hero who wins 3 out of every 4 races, a villan to become said hero's arch nemisis and wins one race every 6 to 8 starts, and a field of 40-60 also-rans every night so we can't complain about car counts, and the show should be over by 8:30 so we can get home and go to bed.  YEAH, THAT SHOULD DO IT!!! LOL

YET...YET, everyone bitches up a storm when Donny Schatz dominates the nationals...."We need a new winner"..."Anyone but Schatz"...YADA, YADA, YADA.

One of the best things about sprint car racing is watching the young guys come up.  I, for one, will continue to attend evey WoO show, Knoxville Nats, Gold Cup, Trophy Cup,....the list goes on...that I can...King and Grumpy or not.

The USA led the World with their spirit and optomism and I have wondered for some time what is causing your demise. It is obvious after reading this that you are the same as my Country (Australia) as negativity and a lack of positive attitudes invades our mentality. The King and Sammy have been great but their time is up and they will be replaced and things will continue as they were before.People speak of being unable to replace these huge personalities.Sammy a huge personality???Give me a break.

We both have more than a few things in common and it has shaped the way we think of racing and the racers of today.

After my family moved from Torrance CA to AZ in 57/58, 4th grade, Jimmy Bryan soon replaced Torrance's Parnelli Jones as my favorite driver. Like Sachs the crown prince of racing, Jimmy left us way to soon and those two men and the others of that era were the hero's of my youth and they were never duplicated or replaced. Oh sure there were men like Vogler and some others that I loved to watch and admire but no, the men of that era were to me at least, well they were bravest or maybe just the craziest bunch ever. Oh, that included my dad, a Hoosier like myself who found his sanity and got out of it for the sake of his family. Ha, I think he just had a moment of clarity..LOL

Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

I would like to see that number retired but I don`t think that will happen as for as Brian driving for some car owner that question was asked of him a couple of years ago and from  what I heard he would not want to give up what he has built with his team and sponsers to do something that may not last for more than 2 or 3 years. He said he would not want to try and rebuild what he already has. But there is that thing we call the silly season.

Said perfectly Stan. very good story and view.

This reminds me of how music is with different generations, each generation thinks their's is the greatest and last generation of Real, Great Music and everything after stinks. I think it rings very true.

The future of Sprint car racing isn't written yet, that is up to us the fans and if the few people that say its all over have it their way it will be. Not for me though, I see alot of light in the future for the sport. There are young guys coming up, theres the mid-age guys that have experience and theres more parody in the sport because of equipment than ever, and that means more different winners. I love that, we can look back at Kinser and say he was great and he was, but you can't tell me that his dominance in alot of those years didn't also turn fans off and away because they simply got sick of 1 guy always winning. I like hearing Johnny announce towards the end of the season that there has been 25 different winners that year or whatever the number may be. We're lucky enough to have 2 Nascar guys that will have 5 total teams on the tour next year and that will likely keep rising as well.

Rose colored glasses can be a dangerous thing, because you have a tendency to not appreciate what you have in the here and now and just want to look back at what you think were the good old days, until one day you realize you went through alot of good times but couldn't realize it at the time because you were constantly thinking about what used to be.

I'm just not sure that Kraig is the guy to run Tony's car, he's just not at the level it appears Tony demands of the guys that drive his cars. Not that I dislike Kraig but he had a shot at driving the car a few years back and just didn't produce so Steve stepped into the car just to hold onto the TSR for the family I would guess.

As far as Brian Brown, I question if he even wants to race full time with the Outlaws. It appears he likes the deal he has going on now and running the schedule he wants and being the owner of his own team. With the amount of sponsorship he has already and the traveling he already does it would appear if he wanted he probably could follow the tour but just chooses not to.

I agree 100%.  In walking the pits at Hales Corners back in the early 90's, one would happen upon Sammy and Steve, signing autographs and looking like they were constipated in doing so.  Tried to say a few things like welcome to Wisconsin, shit like that, and no response.  I ALWAYS thought that Sammy and Steve had the personality of snakes, and it turned me off from them.  I actually rooted for others to win because I did not like them, personally.  I will not miss Kinser, nor will I miss Sammy.  Maybe not better drivers, but there will be replacements and racing will go on. I NEVER went to an Outlaw show to see those 2, I wanted to see Sprint cars.  I stated in another response, that when there are only 4, 5 shows of Sprint cars at my local track, I am going to see them.  Sammy and Steve not there?  I could care less......

He will be running more winged races this year as he's not looking so much at the big show (he's been there) but at the $$$.

I have an expression I like to use about looking too much into the past and not appreciating today's racing.  MY take is that "there's a fine line between historian and dinosaur".  I appreciate today's racing for what it is.  Today's drivers are reaching speeds (even in the 360's) that a lot of the  the legends of the sport couldn't have imagined.  A lot of today's drivers are teenagers and young ladies as opposed to the former WWII fighter pilots sporting crew cuts and chewing cigars we used to see back in the day.  It's a different world today but like I said earlier, the cars still go fast and turn left on dirt tracks so it still holds my interest.

I don't think the sky is gonna fall nor is the WoO gonna fold either.  It seems some of you guys forget back in the USAC days where it was Indycar/CART that was pulling guys away from their dirt racing roots.  It's the same old thing just a different chapter thats all.

As for who are we gonna put in that seat?  There are alot of good racers out there.  Personally I would love to see Hodnet get another shot at it.  He's getting up there now (God I can't believe I just said that) but he has a good 5-10 years left in him and you know he will stick around.  Either way I'm sure the on track product (which is what really matters) will continue to perform and leave those that are true fans happy regardless of what the name of the nut holding the steering wheel is.
