As youngster growing up in No.California in the mid 50's and 60's i started going to races in the Bay Area then other tracks in No. Cal... Some of the locals whom i seen that fate dealt a bad hand and never reached there full potential were..
Bob Sweikert who lost his life at age 29 in a sprint car at Salem Speedway soon after wining the 1955 Indy 500.
Dick Atkins a graduate from the BCRA midgets and NARC sprint car series in the 60's then on to USAC driving for Agajanian, qualified for the 500, won the 1966 Golden State 100 at Sacramento against the likes of Foyt, Snider, Mario, the Unsers and other greats of that era. He was killed a few weeks later after his Sac win in a usac sprint race at Ascot Park, Don Branson also was lost in that same accident.
Sherman Cleveland a young NARC driver who lost his life at Calistoga in the 60's. He was a good driver, fearless and a big time gasser, there was not much safety equipment on the cars during those day's so if your foot was pretty heavy the results were not always good especially at Calistoga in the earlier years.

No one seems to have mention Donald (Doc) Dawson who ran the larger tracks as well as anyone. He left us at the Sprinfield Mile where he loved to race

...neither deceased or injured, but Andy Hillenburg and Mark Kinser left the sport too early...
...and don't forget just how good Jay Drake is/was...hopefully we may see Jay race again someday...

I know this isn't Sprint Car related, but Greg Moore was on the verge of becoming a huge star in CART when he was killed. I believe he was only 24 years old at the time of his death. That crash is still one of the worst looking accidents I have ever seen. As soon as it happened, the crash looked like it was unsurvivable.

I couldn't agree with this more.
On a local level; Paul Lotier. One of the nicest guys anyone could ever hope to meet. One hell of a racer too.
Nationally, I don't see how anyone could not put Brad's name at the top of this list. One thing for sure, he would have given Steve fits over the last 20+ years and changed the winning percentages of several sprint car greats quite a bit. I don't believe he had even come close to hitting his prime when his accident ended his driving career.
After knowing both of them on some personal level, I can attest that two greater human beings couldn't be found on earth. I feel like I'm a better person for having known them both.
The same can be said for the G-man. Great talent, great person, and it was a sad day for many when we lost him.

To me the question implies a young racer that lost his life before it really took off towards towards greatness. In no special order, Jimmy McElweath, Billy Vuckovich, Clark Templeman, Dave Bradway, Jimmy Haines, Robby Syanley, Kevin Gobrecht. There waer many others that were in the middle of great carreers and had them cut short and many more greats that left us before all their racing was done. Thankfully today racing is much safer.

On September 30, 1990, Robbie Moroso was killed in an automobile accident near Mooresville, NC hours after finishing 21st in the Holly Farms 400 at North Wilksboro. The subsequent investigation revealed that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol.
The young lady he hit, Tammy Williams, was also killed. Her career/life was also cut short far too soon!

I was sitting around the other night, thinking back to some of the great drivers who had their careers cut short. I always wonder which ones would be household names if they were still racing. One that is always at the top of my list is Page Jones. I truly believe that he was bound for greatness.
What are some of your picks?

Hawker, this was a great thread. I didn't know some of these names but feel they have all been honored here. I can see they haven't been forgotten even though some are no longer with us.
I would have to say the G-Man because our son was close friends with him and we knew him personally.

I have to say greg moore, truly a driver destined for huge success in open wheel racing. Was waiting to see how he would do driving for roger penske in his next season.
In sprint cars I would have to say kevin gobrecht.
