mid 70s today in Sacramento, bright sunny skies, feels like the perfect night to head to Chico... oh wait, they cancelled on Wednesday because the pits are too wet. Pave/cement them and race. Seems like a small thing to do for what should be one of the West Coast's top tracks. According to a blog from Kevin Eckert last year, Handy planned to resurface the track (that didn't work) and carry turn four to the wall and eliminate the reverse bank. Big plans for someone who cancels 3 days before any races because the pits are too wet. What if it rains Tuesday before the Gold Cup - will they cancel it in fear of 80+ haulers getting stuck in the pits?

I hope its not the death of silver dollar! Been a racing spectator since a kid, my dad raced at marysville ( stockcars) back in the early 70s, and been in this area for my entire life. Im in my late 40s and have been hooked on racing ever since. S D. S. has always been my favorite track. Lately things have changed. We attended Silver cup, good race, but way over priced. Several of my friend declined to attend. Seams they (management), are pricing out families. Now all these cancelations ??? for what. Been to mini gold cup when cars were staged in parking lot. I'm hoping this gets worked out soon before we lose another track. Going to marysville tommorow night. P.S. we need another baylands

Why couldn't they park the rigs "outside" and still race?

Isn't the issue the pits...and not the track?

thanx

You have to go through the pits to get on to the track. Also includes safety crews, ambulances, tow trucks, and push jeeps. So if the pits are too wet to drive in you're not going to have a race.

So gravel the pits so cars can pick them up and bring em on the track and then get thrown around. Yeah great idea...

You do NOT have to go thru the pits to get to the track at Chico. You can park outside, push off and enter the track at the top of turn four.

I am not that old and never attended a race there, but have heard so much about the famed West Capitol Raceway. I was wondering WHO was running that place when it got shut down?

It wasn't "shut down" as you infer but the property was sold to an investment group who let it sit for a period of time ...and then they made a bundle on it.

I would periodically drive by the property and think how sad. From a great race facility to a lot with weeds growing. Frown

You are essentially still going through the pits. Its not paved from the gate to the track at turn 4. Its still dirt, meaning its still mud, meaning if it rains you still aren't going to get the race in.

Rain is forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday, so look for another cancellation by Thursday morning.

Was not going to chime in on this issue but decided otherwise.

Lowered purses? Pretty sure they are the same or raised for each of the races they've put on. If not I'd like to see a comparison on payout but pretty sure the advertised purses this year were high than the payout last year.

Treating push and tow trucks poorly? Seems to me there were plenty of push trucks there this past weekend. Maybe some help on the tow portion would have been necessary if they didn't think their track tow truck wasn't going to be sufficient.

The dirt issue last year? Was discussed thoroughly on this board and another. Promoter tried to bring in dirt he thought was similar to the same dirt he already had. Once delivered realized it wasn't screened like he thought so there was large rocks and debris in the track. For safety concerns the dirt was removed and a race was cancelled. Would you have rather been sitting in the stands worried about large debris coming up? Not me!

WoO mini tire deal, thoroughly discussed again. And really wouldn't have mattered seeing as the whole thing got rained out anyways.

If you can see a friday night race at Chico with 100+ cars please let me know when. I'll be there even if the wife is having a baby. If you really felt that was like a Friday night race you must not have been watching the same event I was. $20 to see 100+ cars seems a fair price to pay to me.

Lastly, you are complaining that instead of a boiled hot dog thats been sitting in a warmer for who knows how long, you got a grilled one to order? Really??? I had a cheeseburger and it was the same deal, order at the window pick up at the grill. It was 100% better than any burger I've had at the place before, I'm happy to wait to not have a pos burger that costs too much as it is.

Thank you...end rant

John Padjen did so much for the sport, for race fans and the city of chico. Handy Racing - is a complete joke and so is Race Dirt.

Glad to see your 1 post was very informative there Reese. I provided a run down of the happenings and an unbiased opinion to what was going on. I see you took the high road and failed at both.

I've been going to the track when Padjen ran it and will still be going to the track after Padjen. Racing is not about the promoters but about the drivers. Making it about the promoters is your problem with the sport. Padjen may have been good for racing back in the day but he was being out promoted before he "retired". Yes retired is in quotations because I'm positive that his retiring wasn't by choice. Living on your reputation as a great promoter doesn't mean you are still currently a great promoter. Chico is the only place to run a weekly 410 series and Handy is the only one currently trying to field a 410 traveling series here on the west coast. For that reason I will continue to support them.

Also what did Padjen do for the city of Chico? (I laughed when I read this part)

I'll wait for your intellectual response.

ya seriously, Padjen doin somethin for Chico? HAHAHA ok so how about the track? ya no improvements for 15 years... outpromoted for years before he "retired" i agree 100%. He WAS huge for the sport, but after he made some money he sat on that place for years. not improving anything, not attempting to change with the times and shit maybe even advertise and have special nights to get fans there. ladies night, military night, something hell ANYTHING to attract more fans. The fan base has all but disappeared way before handy took over. and i agree i do not go to the races for the promoter, it is to help my favorite driver and all the drivers by buying shirts, tickets, hats anything i can do to ensure that they will be there next week. and i will be the first one in line to buy my ticket this week if they race and every race until the end of time to support my track, and drivers in their quest for sprint car fame. just like i have been for 20 years. i encourage everyone to do the same. lets n ot look at the negative because everyone, even the great padjen, have negative shit following us. lets focus on the positive changes we can make to attract more people to this sport. i love this sport and i am sure every single one of you do to and that is why you want it to stay alive soooo HELP it stay alive!

Origopnwhlr, if that was a stab at my comment regarding Reese's one post with his account only being created to lay down that one intellectually stunning argument, there is a difference.

And your +1 to his comment, which I was originally going to let slide, better not have been towards me. Although your stance seems very unbiased on some things on this board, you tiptoe gingerly about taking a side on a issue. Maybe you should tell us what you're really thinking instead of "+1 Smile"
