A 14.4 modem??? You were late in the game! wink

My first machine:

DX 33mhz Processor

250 MB Hard Drive ($300)

4MB Memory ($125 a meg)

512k VGA Video card

2400 Baud modem

5 1/4" Floppy Drive

3.5" Floppy Drive

14" VGA Monitor

HP Deskjet 500 printer (B/W)

I spent just under $4000 to build this computer in 1993. The internet was mainly just text. The big thing at the time was dialing into local bulletin boards where you could post things, but it was primaily used for cheesy little games.

Who here remembers having to use WinSock to dial into the internet???? Talk about a pain in the ass!!!!

I too was a regular on the old Open Wheel Wizard (Remember "Wings are for Fairies"?) site. There were some classic wings vs. non-wings battles in those days.

My first PC was an original IBM PC:

4.77Mhz processor

No Hard Drive

64KB Memory

(2) 5 1/4" Drives

13" Monochrome (Green) monitor

Dot matrix printer of some kind

MS-DOS 2.1 Operating System

I programmed accounting applications using Microsoft BASIC. Our program files resided on 1 floppy (Drive A: ) and the data files resided on another (Drive B: ). Some huge upgrades in those days included a 1200 baud modem and PCAnywhere that allowed us to "remote control" a clients PC for troubleshooting and a 10MB "Hard Card" which was a hard drive on a card that plugged in to a slot in the PC. We were in heaven when we went to 2400 baud modems and that hard drive! Believe it or not, I still occasionally support some of the applications that we created back in those days....(yes, MS-DOS *DOES* still work under Microsoft Windows).

First PC....Commodore Vic 20. 20k total memory but only 4 point something K was usable because the BASIC operating system took up the rest. I don't think Al Gore invented the internet yet when I had the Vic

Paintboss (Eastern Iowa) formerly know by the originals as "Gizzer". Been stopping in here daily as long as I can remember (prolly mid to late 90s). I've met a quite of few hosers but probably only remember a handful of you if I passed you at the track! Probably the Budweisers. Knoxville is my home track (120 short miles away) but have been doin the Kings Royal deal since the Mopar Million.

Discovered the sprints in 1989 - and they caught me hook line & sinker. Seen some races that just thrilled me to the bone, seen some pretty horiffic deals that made me take reservation of if I ever wanted to come back, had some of the best times of my life after the races with some really great people met from all over the country.

I finally spoke up in '99 after reading on here for a while and being an original member of the USACfans message board, which was mainly concerned with racing DTRSC at the time and later became IndianaOpenWheel.

Sadly enough, I don't come on this message board near as much anymore. We had a lot of fun back then, but I don't see near as much on here these days that piques my interest.

I've argued with all the best on here, and even acquired some fuzzy MSPN photos along the way!

Time flys when you are having fun....There weren't many websites back then. CA had NARC, Steve Lafond, Chuck Fry's Sprint Car Page. Jeff Brown's Central PA site, Bronco's Dirt Trackin site in PA. The OW Wizard and TJ's site. I remember going on TJ's chat room and telling him about my new site.

My original address was http://www.epix.net/~hosehead

It sure was different back then. Not everyone had a computer and not everyone with computers was on the internet.

I remember those days. I posted a lot more. Smile

The Open Wheel Wizard, TJ's chat room, and Chuck's website used to get daily visits from me.

Do a lot more lurking now but still enjoy jumping into a discussion from time to time.

I was bored in study hall my senior year of high school ('99) and found Bill W's Knoxville News, which was kick-ass back then (still is, although Bill W has diversified and monopolized). I found the message board and chat from there. I've met a lot of great people through Hoseheads over the years and had a lot of fun. It's hard to imagine what it would be like if Allan had just stuck to plumbing!
