Over a year?
|
Oops! You're right. I should have said almost a year. It's hard to keep track of these old, washed up drivers when they keep winning big races.

I know it's like they're washed up or something.

I said he was a nobody until he got hooked up with RW. I also said DS should have a good idea about setups when RW was there for places like eldora and knoxville. BEFORE, can you read before, DS was a guy on the woo tour nothing more. He and RW teamed up and it was magic, he won dam near everything.
|
Agree 100%. After Ricky the magic has left. Sorry too many back of the top 10's and out of the top 10's this year.
Let's go Sprint Car Racing!
Knoxville - Best Track In the USA!
Eldora - 2nd Best Track in the USA!

The magic - the mojo. Some combinations don't need much of it but they still need it. Others never get any.
Fleeting as hell. Sometimes it lasts a race or two - maybe three, a year or two - maybe three. Rarely 10-15 years.
Can blame it on the driver, the wrench, the tires - blame it on whatever, but ultimately it's the mojo that is lost.
Applies to just about everyone except Kyle Larson

I don't care who you have behind the wheel, if your car doesn't handle you are out to lunch. The crew chief is just as important as the driver. Look at Macrii since he left his team. Look at DeWease in the 69k. Neither one of them forgot how to drive.
Rico hasn't been good for a couple of years. He has been ok but this is the fastest he has been in years.

"I don't care who you have behind the wheel, if your car doesn't handle you are out to lunch"-------absolutely spot on. RW is far from the only guy capable of giving a driver a great handling race car. Should we name them all?

Bottom line with Ricky - Schatz would have double digits in wins each year.. You see what he is with our him and that is not much.

So you always rate drivers on winning big races and Donny just won the King's and Knoxville last year and you say not much?

That made me laugh.
On another thread there's a heated discussion about which of 3 PA drivers is the greatest PA Posse driver of all time, or some such notion. It's hard to tell what the exact debate is about. Then there's old washed up Donny Schatz who has accomplished more than the 3 of them combined.

Totally agree and I'm a PA diehard. For anyone to dump on Schatz at this point shouldn't be taken seriously. The guy is still out there competing and when the big money is on the line he's on every drivers mind.

It's more to illustrate the attitude of "to Hell with the car and with my competitors". I don't have anything against Macri but he is the epitome of young drivers doing young driver things. Junked Mike and Logan Wagner a few times on moves that cooler heads could have prevailed. A few years ago at the Weikert he had Lance Dewease all but beat. He just had to wait for Lance to slip up. Instead he got impatient, jumps what cushion there was, cracks the wall, and kills the car. We can go on but it's not about him, it's more about younger drivers and older drivers having equal desire to win, just some aren't gonna tear up a car for no reason.
The point is somebody like Donny wouldn't have junked his car jumping the cushion. A Jacobs ladder itself is $200 if we say it was titanium plus all the joints etc. The part itself might only be $200, but how much time and man hours are you going to have in fixing and resquaring everything? Maybe an hour? If you're a traveling team with 2-3 guys that $200 part actually cost you $400-$500 and additional wear and tear on your guys. Dragging out the time to maintain and service the car.
|
Way off topic.... everybody knows Macri is young & does what young drivers do, & that Donny is an old pro
I was trying to give credit to Ricky Warner
This is turning into a Schatz vs. Macri pissing match
Can we all agree that Warner had a GREAT run with Schatz, that Schatz isn't as dominant as he was before, and that RICO is doing much better with Ricky as his crew chief????
I don't even know how Macri got into the discussion!

What big races has Ricky won (wrenched) without Donny as his driver ?
besides Grandview...
|
In Rico's last 4 races.3 wins and a 3rd.
Woo - 20 grand Summer Nationals at Williams Grove
HL - 23 grand at Grandview.
All Stars - 3rd at I 70
All Stars 8 grand at Knoxville.
When was the last time Schatz had a group of races like that? I bet I remember - when Ricky was his crew chief.

Rico didnt start on the pole and earned the victory. Werner ,Silva are the best non WOO crew cheifs and when Nationals comes much better race when they arent on the pole.I know they earn it but starting Kyle or Rico or the top WOO drivers on the pole isnt as much fun to watch. Schatz drive from back are what make memories.

What I find interesting about those stats is that if Rico would have won all four, it still wouldn't have been enough to buy a new engine. This sport is crazy expensive anymore.
